Fellow 928'ers contact list for breakdowns while travelling 928roadhelp@charter.net
Erik D. mentioned on another thread how he had car trouble away from home, but near my town. He said he almost had to look me up for help. I would have been happy to respond with anything from tools to a car trailer.
Since I'm not in the phone book as Greg86andahalf, how can we develop a small regional list of owners/mechanics who are willing to help out fellow 928'ers who get stranded on the road or need other help when travelling?
This roster should have at minimun:
Name, contact info and geographical location,
What type of help the person is capable of rendering. This can include tools, repair help, transport vehicles, temp. car storage pending a tow home, the ability to make a personal contact (especially after business hours) with managers of hotels, mechanics, tire shops, etc.
I'm in Western Maryland. I travel to Northern Virginia and Baltimore alot. Although I assume there are a number of owners and mechanics in those regions who might be willing to help me in a emergency, I really would not know how to get a hold of them while in my car on the side of the road.
Instead of posting that info here, I would think that a list could be developed and made available by email for owners to print and keep in their glove box. I would be happy to help do the design and distribution of such a list.
Any ideas?
Greg

An assistance list is already in place on the 928 Owner's Club website. However, the list has not been updated in some time. Stan Shaw has taken on the responsibilities to upgrade and improve the site. I suspect, this list will be one of the items improved. (BTW, the list is supposed to be viewable by Club members only.)

Greg,
I agree, we really need a working list. Although I hope Stan can get the 928OC list updated, I think an "open" list would be more valuable. As someone who does a number of roadtrips a year between Pa/WI and Pa/NC,SC, I'd love to be able to print a list of contacts "on the route" and have it in the car. Hosting a website w this is beyond my capabilities.
If the 928OC list gets updated, or a new one started, I'd like to see a number of geographical references...like, "Eastern PA", "near Allentown" or "near I80" so you could identify the closest help. I know I'd certainly be willing to provide help and I suspect many others would as well.
anybody on the board who is able/willing to make this happen?
Jim

Glad to see some responses.
The list doesn't have to be too fancy, just well organized and printable. I would not recommend a website for posting of personal info.
My idea was to have people email to me the info and I would put together a list which I would email to car owners by request. It would require some sort of screening, telemarekers not welcome!
If you don't own a 928, you don't get the list.
Many of us are in the phone book anyway, It's just that people don't know our full names, etc.
I'm not a member of the OC. An outdated list of of litle use anyway. If you look at all the new Rennlisters in the last year (myself included), it's easy to see that the need for this list. The info would need to be updated frequently.
This would be an emergency contact list only. Not a social register.
Keep the ideas coming!

Here is the email address I established for this.
928roadhelp@charter.net
Info and requests for the list can be sent here.
What do you guys recommend for a screening process? I don't want to see any abuse of the list. I have some ideas for screening, what to you think?

Greg, I think this to be a great idea. I would think it to be hard very to keep the abusers out though.
Even being in a club doesn’t isolate you from malicious acts, as there are always going to be a few unscrupulous nimrods in ever club.

I have a rough format which Jim, Jay, and Shawn Bergstrom have seen and are giving input on.
Max,
I agree. I would limit the info given to name, city (with some interstate location reference), phone# and resources available.
A complete adddress is not needed. I listed my cell phone, but other than that, my info is in the phone book anyway.
Sending a limited reginal list, instead of a nationwide list is also in order. I really don't need contacts in california. I drive the east coast. I think a regional list will be pretty small and of not much interest to anyone other than us.
Proper screening is key. Most of the contributors will be members or users of this forum. As I mentioned before, I think you have to somehow prove who you are and that you own a 928 to get a regional copy. If you get a copy, don't forward it along to others, have them request their copy direct.
Use common sense if someone calls you for help. Get their number and call them back. This emergency list is more for peace of mind and possible break-down assistance for us owners. I don't think the phone will be ringing off the hook.

I agree with Max. There will always be some abuse. With that in mind, I guess people need to be aware of the possibility before they submit their personal information. Now let's see what the possible fields would be...
1. Name
2. Phone
3. City
4. State
5. Favorite Beer
6. Bank account Number
7. Credit Card Number
8. Social Security Number
9. Picture of wife/s.o.
10. Location of spare keys for their Shark.
In an EMERGENCY I think knowing these 10 things woulf be very helpful! <img src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" border="0" alt="[hiha]" />
Seriously though, Greg, you should come up with a "form" for the basic fields one would need in an emergency. I would think 1-4 would be enough. Perhaps there would be some benefit of including what things people can help out with, but then I think you run the risk of further abuse. For example if it lists that I have a home lift (I wish!), people that are not in an emergency situation may be inclined to call to bum a free lift (pun intented). <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[nono]" />
I think the basics are enough. If you break down, then you call and ask if the person can help you out. If not, you call the next closest or you call AAA and demand a flatbed!

Maybe one screening method is that you must provide your information to be used on the list, in order to get the list.
Help can be as simple as looking up some phone numbers, making a couple of phone calls for someone, or holding a flashlight.
What do you think?

ABSOLUTELY! I like the quid pro quo idea. If you sing up, you get the list. Pretty simple and fair. You're just as likely to be called as you are to call. I LIKE IT! <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

I keep a different kind of list with me. The telephone numbers of the Big Three. If something brakes, these are the guys who will get me the parts/supplies I need and a wealth of advice. I also take with me most of the common tools I'll need to do a lot of road side fixes, along with some extra parts (belts, etc). But it would be of great help to have someone near by for a hand or advice on who to call for towing, reputable shops in the area, or even a decent motel to stay at till the shark is fixed, and directions on finding your way in a strange town.
Good Plan Greg.
Although I doubt anyone is going to call on me here in Dutch Harbor. But maybe when I'm relocated to Washington where my shark resides. Which is a 15 min drive from I-5 half way between Seattle and Portland.

Thanks Shane.
I have had two people send contact info so far. With me that makes three.
2 in Maryland and 1 near Pittsburgh.
If the "Big three" would send their info, I will add it.
Right now it's just:
name
city (with some interstate location reference),
phone#(s)
resources available. w/comments like "available weekends," "don't call after 11PM," etc.
Fairly basic.

Hey all. This is a great idea, and it would be nice to get/use the format that the OC list used. When signing up for it, it asked what tools you could provide, as well as expertise if I remember correctly. Also whether you could provide temp shelter for a stranded 928'er. I for one don't mind it being used for social reasons. If a fellow 928'er is going to be in the area, and wants to have a beer, that's great with me. It should be another line on a signup form whether or not you mind being called for social reasons. Just my 2 cents. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />
