3rd Coast Gathering (TX) picture & report thread
Well, we started 3rd Coast with a bang yesterday! We rented the Motor Sport Ranch race track in Cresson, TX for the afternoon, and were hosted by Rob Cohen @ his bee-you-tee-full Villa right at the track. We had a target of 15 cars, and were falling short as it was on a Friday, so we opened it up to a few other cars: a Porsche 996 GT2, a 997 Carrera S, a 996 Carrera, a 964 Cab w/Tiptronic and a '99 M3 that has had a "little work". Rob drove his 911 race car, his FFR Spec Racer and his 928, so we had a diverse group, to say the least.
With only 15 cars, we would run a 20-25 minute session, then do 20-30 minutes of some classroom discussion and pointers to help the beginners, and then head back out to the track. So, we ultimately got in 5 sessions of track in an afternoon. Did I mention is was about 80 degrees with low humidity?
We had one catastrophe: Doc Mirror's '91 GT suffered a potentially mortal wound; his engine locked up while out on the track. He thinks it's bottom end, but the positive thing is that nothing punched a hole thru the block, so we'll retain some cautious optimism. The positive side is that he knows that 928srus is not far from his house, and Roger has a block and/or engine (or two) laying around to help him out if needed.
Afterward, we hung around Rob's drinking his beer for a couple of hours reliving the great time we all had. While, I enjoy driving my 911 on this track, the 1.7 mile configuration that is quite technical, I was pleasantly surprised at how my '91 S4 did, considering I was on street tires and pushing 3500lbs around. I've got the same brakes on my 911, which weighs almost 1000 lbs less, and I run MPSC's on it, so it is somewhat apples and oranges, but it did well. I think I showed the M3 and the 997 S that an automatic V8 in stock trim from the early '90's can move pretty well on a tight track.
I didn't pull my camera out til after we were off the track, so here are some pics of our BS session:

Looks like an awesome time. Looking forward to seeing more pics, and hopefully some track video.
Sure wish I could have made it, but just too many other commitments.

Burning Brakes
Speaking of Chuck S. I remember reading about his loss of power issues last year when he was returning home. What was the solution to all of this? Just curious.

Actually, he and Roger had spent a bit of time the last few months working it out, I think he may have narrowed it down to the WUR? It was running pretty good at the track, but he said he did get a "stumble" at one point.

We had a great time, about 18 or 19 928's over the three days. I didn't get to partake of the track time as I got there to late. Only a couple of miss-haps, Doc's engine and Art Y. had a brake line fail on the track (bet that was fun). The tour was the best so far with lots of triple digit speeds. Great to see everybody again and those of you who missed it, plan better for next year!

We had a great time as well Many thanks to our gracious hosts!
I have quite a few pics to post (and resize), but I thought it would be appropriate to first post one of my favorite pics of the day of my favorite Englishman!
