The owners of a 1990 silver metallic (S7) 928 S4 A/T with only 12,700 miles contacted me by the recommendation of an independent Porsche garage where I'm known. They would prefer to sell their 928 to someone who would appreciate it. It has factory chrome design 90 wheels and supple leather interior and adj. lumbar support on the driver's seat.
It is so nice, if I had the cash and a place to park it, I'd buy it right now. But I don't, so I thought I'd share it with the list.
The car was purchased new in Scottsdale, AZ by the party selling it. It is just like new in all respects. I inspected the car and took many pictures. Asking price is $22,000.
The owners had a major "freshening" service done in December of 2000, replaced the t-belt, spark plugs, all belts, all tires replaced, brake pads, brake fluid flush, fuel system purge, new filter and replaced the fuel pump.
If you are interested in a "new" 928 S4, I've got pictures of the car, the service receipt, window sticker, option sticker, etc.
My email is rich9928@lycos.com

Although the wheels may be chromed, the factory didn't do it. The only wheels the factory ever chromed were for the 356, and they were steel.
The car sounds nice, but I'm not sure I'd want a 13 year old car with only 12,700 miles on it. If the odometer is correct, that would mean the car was driven less than 1000 miles per year. By now, every seal, gasket and hose on it is probably dry rotted. The next owner is likely to have so many leaks, he might consider putting a diaper around the car when parked. :^( YMMV.

Is the glass always half empty Ed?
The same argument could be made for an older vehicle with high miles.
Given the choice, I'll go for a newer, lower mile car every freakin' time...
In this case, there's no 'may' about it - my mileage (and opinion) vary wildly!

I would…think about it.
A 1990 928 w/ low miles out of production for $22K…so it might leak like a 4-month old baby…spend the bucks to pull the engine and replace every gasket, vacuum line you see, new motor mounts, oil pan gasket if needed, check the steering rack while there…check torque tube and transmission for proper operation and if you are luck to not spend more then $5K or so having the car gone through then what you have is a…
BRAND NEW 1990 928 W/ ONLY 12,500 MILES FOR AROUND $27K…looking shiny and pretty smelling newwwwwww.
NO…a 90’ is not worth $27K but you are getting a whole lot of car for that kind of money these days with extremely low miles.
Just my opinion.

I also disagree with those who warn from low mileage 928s. My car had 63k miles on it, and still needed quite a few leaks fixed. However, it had the rock chips also. I'd rather have a low mileage car with original paint and hardly any chips and scratches, and have some mechanical fixes done, than to have a car that's already worn inside and out, but doesn't happen to leak. To me, having to get the leaks fixed and the rubber hoses replaced is less of a depreciating factor than the wear and tear and potentially more mechanics or PO screw-ups of a higher mileage car. If I had to do it again, I'd go low mileage - nothing else.
This is an awesome car, and I really hope it'll find a good home!
MODNV (My opinion does not vary) <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

Ed,
A complete pre-purchase inspection should be carried out. I've offered to facilitate that with a local shop that is very familiar with 928s. This would identify leaks resulting from dry seals.
I started the engine, it sounded just like any new 928 (I purchased my GTS new, so I know what that sounds like). There was no lifter clatter or abnormal sound. It was very smooth. After I inspected the car, it sat for an hour while we had lunch. After the owner left, I saw the spot where the car was parked. There were no leaks.
The owner already had a very complete inspection and over $4000 worth of replacements done to address non-use and "time wear" items. Are you saying that the entire car should be taken apart and put back together before considering purchase?

If all seems well, particularly after a thorough PPI, then ****** that baby up!!!
My concern is with garage queens that the owners maintain based on mileage, and not on time. For example, although this car shows less than 13k miles on the odometer, it is still 13 years old. It should have had its timing belt changed TWICE already, and the next change is due in 2005.
Also, are the tires original? I sure hope not, as they are likely to be dry-rotted and totally unsafe.
Anyway, my point may be moot, since you say the PO has spent $4k fixing it up. Sounds like it's been properly cared for. YMMV.

Both timing belt and tires have been replaced recently on this car. The owner spent over $4k to have age related items replaced. Other items were draining the tank (as a preventive measure), replacing the fuel pump, and redoing all brakes.
I don't think you can get a more "new-like" 928 these days...

The car sold Monday, April 28th.
There was a lot of interest. Talked to a lot of nice people.
Look for the car in the south east, you might even see it at the Porsche Parade this year.

Rich,
I never thank'd you for the pictures you sent so...thanks. I knew it would probably go fast and would have bought it if I wasn't in the middle of selling the house.
Very nice car indeed.
