Jingling transmission?
My '84 5-speed has developed an intermittent jingling noise. It's a high-pitch metalic sound, like keys, but the pattern sounds like its coming from something rotating. The noise emminates from the rear glove box/transmission area, and is loud and clear inside the cabin.
At first I thought it was just something loose in the car, but nothing I found could be causing it. Hopefully, I've stupidly overlooked something (wouldn't be the first time!!). Can anything make the tranny jingle?

Can you hear it outside the car? If it's the trans, I would think you'd hear it outside too, albeit perhaps a different sound.
Also, is the sound only when a gear is selected? Is it in all gears? How about Reverse? If you hear it when the trans is engaged what happens when you use the clutch?

Does the gear shift in your car lean all the way over to the right? If the shifter is in neutral and you push it straight forward, do you get 2nd gear or 4th gear?
I believe that when in neutral, the gear shift should be centered between 2nd and 3rd gear, not 4th and 5th.
However, I've seen lots of 928s with the shifter leaning to the right. I believe this is due to a broken spring in the transmission. It seems to be a fairly common problem. Could it be that you are hearing the broken spring jingling around in the transmission?
I have no idea if my theory is correct or if the jingling could be caused by this problem. Just a theory I have.

My throwout bearing makes a noise like this (at least I think that's what it is). If you push the clutch in a little, does the noise go away? It does for me. (I'd attribute this tip to the orginal poster, but I have no idea who it was)...

Sorry, that was pretty vague.
Holding speed and RPMs aproximatly constant, I can push the clutch in and out and noise doesn't change. Going over bumps rattles it. It goes away at a stop, and at 10mph or less I can't hear it either. So, no, haven't gotten the speed in reverse to hear it. It otherwise doesn't care what gear I'm in. The noise comes and goes as I drive. Its not clear what conditions prompt it to do so.

There's still a gremlin telling me this is something in the cabin, but I've cleaned out the inside and no change

The fact that you say it is a high pitch noise makes me think it must be inside the cabin - if it was from underneath the car, a high pitch noise would probably be dampened a lot.
Bill Ball has this wonderful stethoscope, which he can use to pinpoint the location of a noise. Do you have access to one of those? I think Pep Boys sells them for a reasonable price for automotive troubleshooting.
Best of luck - I know how annoying such noises can be. My Saab has a whistleing noise in the dashboard, but only on hot days and when I go faster than 85mph (or there is wind outside). Dives me crazy, but I have not been able to locate the source.

Really annoying

If you think it's coming from inside the cabin then it probably is, or at a minimum is something directly attached to the body. I would think that a transmission noise would sound a bit more isolated, but I may be wrong there.
If you're at your wit's end and can't find anything inside, I'd jack it up and crawl under the car and chack all the guards, shields, etc for being loose.

I have a similar scenario. In my car, I get a weird jingling/clinking/tapping/ticking (use your imagination ) sound coming from the transmission when I'm cruisin in 1st. The sound isn't too loud, but noticable. It only happens in 1st gear though.
Anyone have any ideas why?
