Red face Cooling Issues

Took the car out to strech her legs tonight since the weather was finally cool here in Dallas. I was about 2 miles from the house after driving aggressively and noticed the temp gauge right up to the bottom of the red. The light never went on as I immediately pulled over and let it cool down. Now this is a car that in 7 years has never gone over the second white line. I let it cool down until it hit the 1st white line then kept the hood cracked open and got home babying her. The Coolant is a few years old (extended life) Changed all hoses at the same time. The overflow never went up from normal and the radiator never seemed super hot. Could this be a faulty sending unit? I thought also that the thermostat would stick in open position if it went. Am I wrong? I plan on changing the coolant, thermostat, and the switch for the electric fan, which by the way, never activated.
ON the way home, it never got above the 2nd white line. Any ideas? Thanks.

Chuck,
Most properly the thermostat. The thermostat in the 928 is working 'in the opposite way' when open it close from circulating in the engine and force the cooling water via the radiator. I.e. if the thermostat is 'dead' the engine get overheated.

Thanks Erik

I'm going to replace the thermostat anyway so hopefully that will help. Normy, I'll post when I get it apart.
BTW, Normy, what's with that F$$$ Y** tag line??

Your coolant pump may have failed. The typical failure mode is for the plastic impeller to spin on the driveshaft. (This is a fail safe; a metal impeller will chew into your block if the shaft bearing fails.) How long is it since your pump was replaced? I'd have it checked ASAP, if I were you.

Have you observed your electric fan running recently when the car was hot (ie above normal) like in heavy summer traffic? If so, the fact that it didn't come on may well point to a gauge anomaly .... but I'd still check that coolant is circulating properly!

In my '80, if the temp gauge reads a little higher then usual and I'm not expecting it to do so (doesn't often happen), I reach under the pod and poke the connector near the temp gauge with my middle finger, to see if the needle drops back to normal (flipping it the bird; LOL!). That can make a needle-width, or two, difference. Have you checked the instrument panel connectors for corrosion (hopefully none) and security of fit?

"The Coolant is a few years old (extended life)"

I guess I could be a little obsessive compulsive, but I change the coolant on a yearly basis with other preventive maintenance items. It is cheap piece of mind, IMHO of course.

Normy - off your meds again?

An explanation or apology seems to be in order.

Gretz, I went from an 80 C to 75 C thermostadt and it lowered the temp about 2 widths of the needle. It now operates slightly below the middle of the two lines.

Glenn

Gauages AOK. Took apart cleaned and replaced circuit board 2 yrs ago as well. I will check the sending unit and probably replace.
Anthony, I'd say being OCD on any fluid is ok. Can't hurt right!? Sounds like yours and mine might be 79 Silver Metallic Cousins. Mine is Ser#....070. Jay Kemph in New England is something like ....200.
Not many of those out there.

Chuck, Mine is Ser.#...162 Good luck with the cooling problem, BTDT recently. With the T/Belt,W/P and Thermostat age an unknown, I changed them including the fan switch (radiator). I too, used the 75C parts. I also serviced the fan clutch. Problem cured. I did have some previous metal impeller damage to the block, while it looks to be minimal, I am unsure as to how much damage will ruin the block.

Guy’s (and gal’s)

I can’t stress enough how important coolant changes are. I hear ever 2 yrs is recommended but I think I’ll go ever year BECAUSE…after having a pre-purchase inspection done on my “now owned car”…I was told one head was seeping oil…hmmmm…turned out to be coolant problem because PO neglected to change coolant and eventually corroded through the head gasket. After opening the head, they decided it was best to pull engine and go through the top end. Fortunately, no damage to the heads but damn close…Cost…about $3000.00 so…change your coolant!

I’ve also noticed my 88 shark moves a little on the temp dial.

It appears the Normeister has elected to remove that part of his response in lieu of explaining it.

Perhaps it was merely due to a case of jet lag... <img src="graemlins/sleep.gif" border="0" alt="[sleep]" />
