There is a choice of the tensioner pulleys (referred to as 'Timing Belt Tensioner' at parts sites). I would recommend going with 'OE Aftermarket'. There is a less expensive pulley I've seen, by 'GMB' but it looks less well made, too. IIRC, it's made in Korea, and has a green bearing seal.

The tensioner/damper (<$80) and lever (<$30) are usually Bilstein, the OE pulley (<$50), Rueville/NTN.

Can you advise an internet source with good prices, products and service.

Dave...........they're Audi parts and the part #'s are in Ken's instructions (in this thread).

I'd start with a dealer then go from there. I don't know if I'd want to go real cheap though.

Dave,

I get mine through a friend's shop. I haven't bought parts from the internets, so I don't know. It's a common Audi engine, so most any import auto parts store should be able to get them through WorldPAC, IMC, etc. (IIRC, IMC had better prices for the same exact parts, last time. The prices fluctuate, though.)

Did you have it on the car when you came down to the Heckowee tour?...the reason I am asking is that I believe the 5sp cars are harder on the tensioner than the automatics due to the engine braking most people with 5spds use. The forces on the tensioner are likely similar to rotating the engine backwards (where all the forces are concentrated on the tensioner)...

If you don't rev match..the high speed engine braking will likely stress the Porkensioner...so I am curious as to how many have been installed on 5spds..and how hard they are driven..before I spring for one...

thanks in advance,
Tom

Tom,
I dont really see how it will see any more real stress from compression braking etc. However.

I dont think I had it when I came down for the heckowee tour.
Anyone who has been driving with me knows that my cars are NOT babied,
So I have put it through the paces and it is still in perfect condition. Though I do for the most part rev match.

As said before I have about 5k km on this one, and no issues. In fact I am putting it on my other 928s as soon as this run is through.

I also sent a payment in for one "PKsnr, ROW, No-Airpump". Thanks!

I sourced the OE german made Audi parts of a guy on ebay for $160 shipped.

I'm in for one 'USA GTS with air pump bracket' ... payment sent.

BTW, I also have a 968 and definitely appreciate the self-adjusting design. Shame Porsche didn't check with Ken before continuing with the original tensioner design for the GTS. You'd think the guys working on the 968 engine would have told their buddies on the 928 engine team what they were doing ... but then, GTS would have had Variocam, and ... the whole world might have turned out differently ...

Mike..........remember you'll need a OEM tensioner gasket or do as I did and make your own.

A new timing belt of course and then consider the water pump, cam, crank and oil pump gears.

As far as the VAG tensioner, I would go with Clair in MA. I buy a lot of parts from them. They are a dealership, but have significantly less mark up then any other dealership I've priced. Nice guys/gals as well. http://www.clairaudi.com/

The tensioner gasket is there only to protect the block mounting surface, in case you ever wanted to revert back. You can make your own, like Malcolm, or even use silicone, I guess.
