Were they all salivating over the prospect of writing tickets for the other infractions, perhaps defacing public property with long films of rubber Just kidding!!!

To be clear, I wasn't pulled over. On one occasion, I pulled into a parking spot at a cafe, and two cops were at a table right in front of the spot where I parked; one of them mentioned the plate and I gave him my response, his reply was a shrug. On another occasion, I was parked in a fire lane for just a second while I was grabbing my cell charger from my hatch area, and a cop rolled up to talk to me about where I parked and mentioned the plate in passing. So, it may be that my excuse would not have worked if I had been pulled over specifically for the plate. But it was good enough the two times I used it.

Last time I was ticketed for a front plate was ~25 years ago, on a "cruise night" (think American Graffiti) where the cops were making every effort to harrass everyone out of the area. IIRC, the same ticket also dinged me for tint on the windshield(my homemade tint strip across the top was too wide), a non-functioning side marker, and bald tires. But the whole conversation started with the plate.

When pulled over for "other" infractions...cops have made note that not having the front plate could get me a ticket..but never did ticket me for it....I've been running front plateless since 99 when I got my 87...

I carry it in the glove box and will use the old bracket on order...$200 dollar thing..if it ever comes up... For the most part, like Kie...I will rebel in my own little way by not having a front plate since it truly does destroy the lines of the car..any car for that matter short of big chrome bumper land yachts.

I suppose it gets down to how rabid are the Police in your particular area...all they want/need is something to pull you over for...in the old days...burned out tail lights etc..now days..tinted windows, no front plates..not wearing seat belts..and just about anything they can think of...just to get you pulled over and then the offenses go up from there..easy pickings..easy money..and afterall..it's all about the annual policemans ball fund...and money in the police coffers...

later,
Tom

Cliff, collector plates usually come with a ridiculously low miles-per-year requirement. I don't know how they check up on it, but you might want to read all the fine print before you sign up.

In Maryland (and VA, I believe) you're only supposed to drive a car with collector (aka "Historic" or "Street Rod") to and from a service garage; or meets or events like car shows.
If you're ever pulled over or get into an accident in a car w/special plates, you'll have to come up with a story as to what event or what garage you were going to at the time. It gets even harder to explain if you're out at night. It also gives the insurance co. a reason to reject your claim if you have one.

Some cars (miata) which need all the air they can get through the front but dont want ugly plates up high (where they ALWAYS sooner or later get pushed back and damage paint), I have seen owners fit a hinged plate at top of air inlet, such that when moving it blows up out of the way, but hangs down like a normal plate when stopped/slowed. Have also seen plate bottom hinged with a light spring to erect it when stopped.

I got tired of getting tickets for not having the front plate on the bumper. (In Virginia the law requires front plates both front and rear).
Had another close call with the police today so I decided to buy the bullet and installed the front plate today. Cost: $1.60 for the inserts plus my labor.
I drilled the two small holes and I am now done with it.

Of course the real reason for the front plate is because it is the best target for the radar gun. I live in Washington and have never heard of anyone getting pulled over for it. Plus I hate the look...and keep the plate in the trunk with the mounting bracket at the ready for the ensuing sob story.

I was going to use the excuse that I just got the car and am waiting on the plate holder from Caliornia (blame it on those guys...lol) and hope.
Antique or 'horseless carriage' plates in TX do not require a front. Also, the registration is good for 5 years, and it's cheaper than the annual plates. One of the more humorous things to see is the 'horseless carriage' plates on my 25 year old Ferrari.

No front plates in AZ. In fact they only issue one to you.

Az allows one plate, and the window tint standards are way different. That won't save you from a ticket in the great and socialist republik of KellleyFawnYa should you decide to stray here. Revenue is king!
