I have a 2005 MB C240 as my company daily driver. It will be switched out for the new and gorgoeous 2008 C-Class in a month's time. And yet, I am still tempted to make my 928 as my daily driver. I bought my 928 with 55K miles. She just turned over 60K miles. I just can't get rid of the itch to drive her!

 600 mile/week drive ...... I'd love to drive the 928 every day
but I'm seriously thinking about getting a high MPG car
I have a similar drive, mostly take the 928 except nice sunny days when I take the mustang convertible; they both have snow tires on now ready for the winter.
Sometimes i take my wifes car which is a high MPG car but I never drove it 2 days in a row; just no fun!

Alternate between the 928 and our family mobile - Toyota Highlander. When the 928 is running right (needs new alternator at the moment) I do the same thing every weekday morning. Wake up, peek through the blinds, check the weather, and wonder if it's clement enough to drive the OB.

I concur with those who have stated that the car likes to be driven. That is perhaps one of the most interesting and redeeming aspects of this car. The flagship, high-end car from one of the world's most highly regarded sports car companies, and it is happy being the daily beater. I like that.

I think the question should be re-asked..Who DOESN'T use their car (or at least one of them) as a daily driver?

I bought mine thinking I would use it only on the highway since I have two other cars. I have a Rabbit for in town driving, hardware store, grocery getter, etc., and a 914/6 for grins But the 914/6 was in the process of restoration so I needed a P car to drive (or get a shrink), and I needed an automatic because of knee surgery. I planned to use the 928 on frequent drives to San Francisco and to Porsche Parades (I'm a Parade junkie) across this vast country once a year.

Ha! Ha! Ha! Presently, the Rabbit shares the garage with the 914/6 and its two engines, while I run up the miles with the 928. I take it everywhere: to the grocery store, to OSH, to the recycle place, to the city, to Pennsylvania, to Florida, to Oregon, to Los Angeles, to traffic court, to the gym, and even an occasional autocross. I have put 70,000 miles + on it in a little over 5 1/2 years. My "to do" list is getting bigger since I am working more and tinkering less. I am getting irritated that some things are still unfixed, like windshield washers that have never worked but I am too lazy to replace the two motors. I need to re-spray the dash to dullen the sheen, but I'm so lazy I simpy put a square of that perforated rubber no-slip mat on top of the pod and the reflections in the windshield went away and I can spend my weekends chasing ....(well, we won't discuss that here). I think the motor mounts have been bad since I've owned the car so that's the next thing to change. I want to send it to the factory and have them restore it and then spend a few months driving around to all the Formula One races in Europe in my "new" 928 and then buy a really new one a year after they are introduced. So I am saving my coins now for that fantasy.

The truth is, I need another 928 as a spare just in case......and to use while this one is in the paint shop.

I drive my 84 daily. I'm putting probably 300 miles/week on her. Mileage seems to be around 18 mpg.

Here here, 36 miles roundtrip in heavy traffic. I enjoy it more than my truck I had but cringe at the wear and tear I am putting on it.

I forgot to mention mileage, although that is NOT the reason I bought it. I can get 22 mpg if I stay under 100mph and tread lightly on the throttle......but then I fall asleep at the wheel and end up in a ditch. This is not a Prius. It seems it is most at home above 3000 rpm so that's where it is driven. I just want the other cars to get out of the way. That doesn't make for good mileage. Recently on a trip to LA I got about 15 to 17 mpg, but I got there in a jiffy. I pray for rain too, so I can go even faster. I chose to drive rather than fly because it is so much more fun and I don't have to be strip searched. What am I? A bird? Then why do I want to fly through the air? Don't forget that you may write off a percentage of the cost per mile for business use, and my company owns my 928 for business purposes. That makes the drive to LA a bit more bearable, and the grin on my face even wider.

I too use mine as a DD - 55 miles per day and average 16mpg. OK, sometimes I swap it out for my '68 912 but when the temperature is north of 90 degrees and the humitidy high, it's a bear driving a non-A/C car.

I just started a job with a 600 mile/week drive and I've been alternating beetween my Ranger truck and the 928. I'd love to drive the 928 every day but I'm seriously thinking about getting a high MPG car with gas prices so high in the SF area.
That doesn't make sense. For the cost of a new car, you could drive your 928 for years before the benefits of mpg savings would catch up. Plus, the insurance on a new car will be more; plus sales tax, plus property taxes...

No thanks!

I don't have a daily commute, but I drive the 928 often. Unfortunately, most of my driving is in-town. It rarely gets to see the highway, but has been on several 500-1,000 mile round trips.

THAT is the truth! I have a friend who prefers Hondas, and she keeps bugging me to buy a Honda and save money. I haven't figured out how she arrives at that conclusion, unless I keep the car for 30 more years. But I would get ill from boredom and the cost of arriving an hour later at most every destination would offset the savings in fuel. Hey, I could drive a Honda and be half dead and save for a casket which I would need sooner because life would hold less purpose....!!

Of course, an NSX might be the exception to the above rule but I doubt it gets very good mileage the way I would drive it.

Small town, short commute, probably less than 20mi per day of all routine driving plus a few long haul trips; I noticed that my OB suffered electrical gremlins and other odd behaviours when I first purchased it. All of the electrical stuff seems to have faded on its own with the daily abuse.

AFAICT the previous owner(s) drove it very little - 110k miles in 27 years=4100/year....I have put 8000mi on it in 6 months.

As noted above, it is almost never worth buying a new car just for better gas mileage. When you factor in purchase, interest, taxes etc, and you can only discount the DIFFERENCE in mileage, the break even time can go over a decade if you don't have a long commute.

Of course, you could swap your shark straight up for an econo-car

Two mentions of windshield washers that don't work.

Mine didn't either, until I spent a couple of quality hours with pins and tubing and check valve and running water through the clogged system. Ran the brown stuff through 'til it was clear, use the hose into the reservoir and do it again and again. Now it's fine.

I have 2 (third on route atm) and one is the DD for the other half, she does roughly 60km round trip each day.

I dont work in town, so mine are strictly toys, same with the 07 ZX6R which I will be getting rid of soon, as it is getting to dangerous to ride around here.

928's are made to be driven......which is why so many of them have such high mileages!! With proper upkeep they can be fine daily drivers......well except they are a bit of a gas hog.....

With that said I DO NOT drive mine everyday.....a couple times a week keeps me smiling......most of my reasons for not driving sharky is the fact that I live in a very high auto theft-burglary area...no sense putting sharky at undue risk...another factor is my brutal 3 mile commute...barely gets sharky warmed up!

Unless you have a pristine low mileage example (think Froggy or the 312mile GT) then you might as well drive it and enjoy it!
