Question Info needed for a new "winded" owner

Hello everyone,

I have been in the process of purchasing a 928 for the past 2 months. First, I found a 81' Euro 5sp, paint was tolorable and the body looked very straight, interior was OK at best most of the electrical worked with the exception of a few slow moving parts, motor seem to run good and the entire engine compartment was surprisingly clean and not that "i'm about to sell it" kind of clean, the transmission on the other hand worried me -- I was told it had a fairly new clutch, but it needed to be adjusted-I would grind in all the gears and it took a lot of finesse' to get it into any gear if the car was moving, from what I had found from my research was 2 things, Yes the clutch is hard to adjust, but also the syncros were prone to go bad in earlier years. But, I had wanted a 928 for about 17 years and for the price($3800) I figured I would have a great restore project that I would be able to drive without to much work(in hopes of just needing a clutch adjustment). So, I gave the guy a $500 deposit to hold for me. Well, since then I found an 85' Auto, that is in much better condition and that I actually like better (pictures in my profile) So, I am going to eat the $500 and if by chance anyone is intrested this guy would probably let the car go for the remaining $3300, if you would like any more info. on that you are welcome to email me and I would be glad to but you in contact with the guy(who is actually looking for a 944(951).

Now with that said I am picking up the 85' on Monday and I wanted to find out a few things. I would like to know if anyone knows of anything I should look for or replace right away? (the PO in not sure of last timing belt replacement so that is on the top of the list)
I have been reading about the ball joint replacement, Can someone tell what year that began? Are there any things I should look for specific to the 85'?
One last thing, this car was offered as just a 928 and everything I have looked at for the 85' has been for 928S, Were there non-S's in 85'?

Yes, I know I have alot to learn and thats why i'm here.

Any help or info. that anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Read through the top Topic titled 'General Info for New (and not so new) 928 Owners'.

Lots of good informational links in there...

Hey Randy,

I just got done reading the thread and I still have all of the extra sites to check out. It definatlly had alot of useful information. The only thing I found wrong with your suggestion is for every question it answered, it lead me to another question. It just seems to be a viscous cycle of knowledge. LOL

I wanted to ask you something else, One of the replys lead me to a site that he posted pics which showed a 928 that had colored lenses on the tailights and marker lights, but the web address that was listed was a dead link. So, would it be improper to email the person who left the reply to ask him where one might attain these covers?

Thanks very much the help,
Dave

Vegas,

One of the most useful features on this board is the archive search feature. I typed in "aluminum balljoint" and got a few hits which would interest you. Just look at the top of this page and use the search feature. It's amazing how many times the same questions are asked and answered. Searching archives allows you to get the answer immediately, instead of waiting for a response.

The tinted lenses were probably the ones' Pierre from South Africa was thinking of producing and marketing. He had a gorgeous sHARk named 'Fat Bully' which he is now racing. Look up lens covers on the search feature.

As a matter of fact John, the name "fat bully" was in the link under the pic,but it was a dead link. But, I'm still searching.
Thanks for the warm welcome, I am looking forward to many, many Q & A with all of you.

Thanks,

Dave
