Default Role of Oil Fill Canister?

Am ready to refill crankcase after doing a month of deferred maintenance on the 84 5sp my wife and I bought.

Happens that oil line is still disconnected from front metal tube at front of engine leading to pan, after TB/WP/MM/ Susp redo/ brakes ..etc.

Can we take the quick easy route and fill 8 qts through the pipe with a funnel, or need to add via fill canister (which might be leaking a bit) ?

Am not sure if the oil fill canister routes all oil to the pan, or if it has appendages that feed oil to other places for lubrication or pump priming, like top of cam towers, oil pump cavity, and don't want to starve anything.

What say ye?

Thanks in advance, Chris

In my 82s the oil just drops straight down into the pan; I mean if I pull out the little filter basket thing at teh top then I am looking straight down at the pan.
if you are worried then turn the engine over a few times by hand or with the ignition coil(s) disconnected so the oil is pumped around without any stress on the oiled parts.
Always a good idea to put some oil in the oil filter before connecting that up.

Cheers

I've filled my 81 many times via a funnel in the rubber line going to the pan (after the fill canaster).

If it was running a month ago, there is still the same amount of oil on every part as a car that has been sitting for a month in storage. No worries.

It's not the filling but the running that needs that hose. The oil filler is also a mist collector so oil and water will run out the horizontal steel pipe.

I don't see where he suggested running the car with the hose off.

You're right. Just trying to help. Gotta be put on before starting anyways.

And, no, the oil doesn't go anywhere except down the tube. That is unless it gets real high and goes down the other tube but that just leads into the crankcase anyways.

Excellent. Thanks folks. Getting anxious now, have the weekend to continue the project. Soon should be roadworthy.

Saving a shark --- most fun I've had with tools in a while. Like a big tavern puzzle, gotta take your time, read the archives and think all the steps through.

Thanks for helping. Will post some pictures soon.

Thanks, am hoping this tension is good to begin the driving. This thing should have more power than those Jumbolina aircraft y'all fly over the Alps in....

The measurement is good. Can't tell by looking but the engine needs to be at TDC with the cam marks lined up as well. After changing the tension give it a full two turns before checking again.

before you button everything up, I suggest you remove and check your suspension tower brace----looks like its really bent in the pics. (maybe it's just the camera making it look bent?)

it should be flat (straight/unbent) when placing it on a flat surface.

a fresh coat of paint on it wouldn't hurt either.

I'm willing to bet most 928's with the aluminum bar have some bend in them.
