Why is it so hard to find 83-84 OB cars?

I don't know that this contibutes at all but, my car, which I've had now for about 20 years, costs me next to nothing to keep. It's well sorted out, I do the maintenance myself (with reasonably priced parts from our vendors)... and best of all- becuase the car is now over 25 years old, it finally qualifies for classic car insurance ....$147 / year full coverage! I won't sell it if I can't get a good price becuase it's just too cheap to keep at this point. I presume a few of us OB owners are in the same boat?

In general a lot of 928s are offered, but most have costly issues of one kind or another. Some of the best "deals" are priced pretty high...and often worth it when you factor in what it will cost to get a neglected car up to par. Many buyers won't pay premium and gamble that they'll get a "steal." It's human nature. One problem, as mentioned above, is that you usually have to be willing to search nationally and be willing to travel, pay for PPIs, etc. to find a good car. I spent a few thousand on my last purchase in failed PPIs, wasted travel, etc. It's disheartening how many people will misrepresent cars to sell them. But if you want to be assured of a good car, you have to be willing to do your homework, unless you already know the owner and the car. In 928s, cheap does not usually equate to value. Admittedly, upfront PPIs and travel costs can increase the overall cost of the car...but not if you avoid buying one that has expensive gremlins lurking. Then again, sometimes there are extenuating circumstances that prompt the cheap sale of a great car....divorce, death, etc. But these are pretty rare....but you still have to be cautious. These are 928s after all and many will eat your bank account rapidly. I don't think I've ever seen a reasonable 928 "fixer upper". If some 928s were given to you free, you'd still lose money getting them running well. A good read is the book, "The Gold-Plated Porsche" by Stephen Wilkensen.

We own an 84 5-spd and I'm pretty sure that model year was the highest production year for the car. Nevertheless, we OB owners love the look and vintage of our cars. They underperform compared to the 32V cars (especially the GT varieties), but they represent a time period in which the 928 was arriving at the pinnacle of its notoriety.

Seems like this is right in the realm of what people are talking about. Certainly won't require $10k to make it a daily driver. It might be one now.... https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/388208-fs-1984-928-s-red-black-auto.html
