Default The next Porsche 928 Challenge. 928 vs the world :)

I dont know if i mentioned it before, but we have entered the Holbert Porsche 928 in the world renowned SuperStreet Magazine TIME ATTACK event. Now called SuperLap. its bascially a time trial event, sponsored by Superstreet magazine for all comers. You qualify in the events around the country and the world. last year folks came from Japan and Germany to compete. top 3 finishers in regional qualifiers can be invited, or folks that have paid a lot fo money in advertising can go. However, the 110% rule applies through out the day.

The event will be held, as it always is, at Buttonwillow Raceway near Bakersfield Ca this next Wednesday , November 7th.

The rules are pretty simple. all ricey rocket cars are elgible, but no pushrod engines over a flat 6 in size. (so this means no V8 chevy or fords or V10 vipers) However, it is wide open for our porsche 928 and ferarris. in fact, in the class we will run, (anything goes on DOTs, but you have to have it regestered and have factory glass still installed), the Ferarri has the record at 1:57.xx for configuration #13 (sweeper, with bus stop). last time i was at buttonwillow was the Holberts car maiden voyage race 6 years ago. i have not been back since. I think i was in the low 2:00. range but i cant remember

Anyway, we are trailering the Holbert car to the track with the eRACING motorsports team. (my brother and me). and we are going to beat the snot out of the Holbert machine and see how we do.

This is a big event with lots of magazine coverage. One of the stars is a Skyline that has 750hp from japan driven by one of their champion drivers.
fortunately, there are several classes. we are limited and rear wheel drive. there are 4 other classes , like front wheels drive, all wheels drive and some street classes. I dont know how we will do, but based on last years tiimes, we should be in the top 10.

go to the website and see the rockets that have been there in the past

With some fresh "dumpster" tires you should be right in the middle of the action! Most likely you are going to get some free press too...with such a "famous" 928.....be sure to keep some youtube links handy...or better yet burn a few CD's of the video to handout to reporters!

If all it needs is overhead cams them many Mustangs would be "legal" including the 5.4 liter 500 hp Shelby .....some how I do not think so ! Wrong pond to splash in

When I read the rules, I interpret it like Jim did. But looking at the results in that pdf, they let a 360 Modena play last year. So I guess there is precedence for a dohc V8 . . .

so, by this , it means: no pushrods AND anything larger than a flat 6. so, you can have a flat 6 and pushrods. if you have an 8, and it doesnt have pushrods, you are ok. so, the ford overhead cam could run!

Ive heard its just a NOPI type fest! lots of EVOs, subarus, and other tuner cars.

I think we will do well. certainly there will be a ton of press there.

It will be interesting to see how we are received

I havent been to buttonwillow in a long time as i said. it will be kind of cool to just bang off the rev limiter for a few laps and see how the times fall. its a tough track , with the configuration they run, but still a lot of fun.

The 911 cup cars are 3.8 liters (flat six) and that I believe is the MAXIMUM displacement that they intend to let run the Modena baby V-8 is ONLY 3.6 liters. As I said the Mustangs have been overhead cam V-8 s for YEARS and I doubt that they are welcome. Good luck I hope they let you run...

I know they eliminated the GT3 cup car because it is a factory race car this year, but didnt know about the mustangs.

Ive asked this question several times, and got the same answer, that it is ok to run the 928. i think a good question is whether the mustang with OHCs can run

That might work. I had young guy at a track day ask me "who put the V8 in". You'd have to mask the sound though, maybe put a quiet muffler on one bank and a 6" fart can on the other?

I was asked the same question by the guy at the track gate. Wanted to know if it was difficult putting in a SBC.
