I don't see the alloy number in my information, but what I have is yours to look at. The scanned images are too large to attach in this thread. What's your email address? Pages 9 and 10 deal with fenders, hood and doors, or I can send you the whole document - all 10 pages.

Actually, I'm resizing the images now - they should upload OK.

Yeah, composition is listed on pages 9 - 10.

If anyone would like this entire document "The Use of Aluminum in the Porsche 928" or another I have, "The All-Aluminum Auto Body - A Study Based on the Porsche 928", I can send them to you, or put them up on my server for download.

After resizing the images of both papers, they total only 2.5 MB. Let me throw them up on a server and get you a link. It'll just take a few minutes.

Greg, have you read the All Aluminum Body paper yet? Page 1 says the fenders are made of Alusingen alloy AC 120.

I hope something here has been helpful.

Kary,

Thanks for the technical paper - I have been wondering about this myself. From the info in the paper, the hood and fenders are 6000 series (pretty close to, but not exactly the same as 6061) and the inner sheet metal is a 5000 series. This makes pretty good sense - both are reasonably economical and relatively easy to work with (esp. forming). And both are very weldable. (7075 is virtually unweldable, although very strong. I don't know about 2024.) Should reassure anyone trying to make repairs that involve some welding.

I was showing the better half just how knowledgeable and what a tight group the 928 community is.

I want to thank you for this information.

I owe you a beer, or 20.

Thanks once again.

Greg... the 'gauge' of my (left) front fender is 1.5 mm, or
about .060 in. Don't know the alloy code. See above.

Hope that helps.

G'luck.

IF someone has access to a hardness and conductivity test then that would tell you exactly what the fenders are made from.

Mmmm. Beer.

My wife and friends are amazed at the variety of questions you can get answered here. Without Rennlist, you have to wonder how many 928's would be left.

Well, it will tell you the hardness and conductivity, but not much more. Hardness is a function of alloy + heat treatment, for one thing (and to some extent, age - I know this from personal experience ). Actually, thanks to the paper Kary provided it's pretty easy: just look up the analysis of alloys given in Machinery's Handbook and you'll get the series and pretty close to the specific alloy. What I did

I know for sure that with out the list my 928 would not be near as far along and would have cost me a LOT more money.

The depth of knowledge here is very deep.
