Post 928 gts ebay sale

There was a 95 928GTS,blk/blk,32k miles, for sale on ebay over the weekend that eventually went for a decent price of about $45K. I was going to bid except for the owner declining to answer all the questions concerning the car/history and refusing to allow a pre-purchase inspection. The owner had no maint. records and advised that the left front fender was painted but declined to go in detail reference what happened. This was my first time on ebay looking for a GTS. Just wondered if this is normal(i.e. as is condition, with little interaction with the buyer). These are so rare , should I have bid anyway since the price was so good.
Appreciate any input.

No, I think you were wise to avoid this one. For a car with no records or maintenance history $45k was high. You could easily spend another $10k in stuff that may be wrong with this car. If it's a flood car there may be things that can never be corrected.

Most reasonable 928 owners will not only be able to show you records and maintenance history on their car but would enjoy doing so. The fact is, for the best of the 928's out there, they aren't getting any younger and money needs to be put into them. When you have a history on the car, it makes it so much easier. Without one, you're in trouble.

That car was PERFECT. It's nice to see that at least the 928 GTS still goes for alot of money. They are more expensive than 993s or 996s. I have seen four 996s 99' year with a "buy it now" of less than 43k. And most 993s are in the low to mid 30s. But 94-95 GTSs go for 45k and up. I have seen them for as much as 120k. That's more than a 996 turbo! Their is even a 94' on the rennlist classifieds in the mid fifties. However, 93' models don't hold their value as well. This is pretty cool.

Frenzy,

Any 928 out there has better build quality than any 996 Porsche on the market. They don't make 928's anymore, but 996's are rolling of the factory lines like cupcakes at the Hostess factory. If you were to have been given all the records on this car THEN it would've been perfect. As it was, you were not, and could have easily been in for a lot of costly problems in which case the obnoxiously difficult 928 Brothers would have been of little to no help to you. Instead of telling you what a great buy you got they'd be asking what kind of fool you must be to pick up a car with no records or maintenance etc etc etc.

While there are GTS's out there going for 80 grand and up, no one is buying them. The owners are living a pipe dream and the cars appear month after month, year after year, dropping about 5 grand every so often. One would be this 223 mile GTS in Florida. A year or more ago, it was offered at over 100 grand. Now you can pick up the Dupont Registry and it's offered for $85k and STILL it sits.

Anyway, rest easy in your decision.

I purchased my '94 GTS Black/Black 5speed, full records from the same dealership, 47K miles, perfect body, excellent condition, for $41K. Had a pre-purchase inspection, put $1200 in a new timing belt, water pump, and tranny service. In love with it. There were two GTS's in the LA times in the last two weeks. One was a '94 GTS 5speed with 32K for $49.9K the other was a '95 auto with 27K(I believe) at $45K. They're both no longer listed. I'm going to call the guys today and find out what they got for them, I'll report.

The same can be said about those 993 turbos going for 80 grand . What's your point.

The '93 GTS in LA is a pile. I looked at it the guy wouldn't let me drive it. It's an automatic, has an aftermarket radiator that he somehow broke and had repaired. There's a gash in the left rear wheel well. The paints nice, but it's got some miles 57K if I remember correctly. His records are a joke and the guy's a major flake. Stay away from this one.

928 Brothers

Did you look at this vehicle. When you say it is perfect is that because you are familiar with the vehicle or just because it is a rare 5speed GTS with 32K and sounds perfect. I would be interested in hearing if you've seen the vehicle. I believe it was in New York. Let me know.

Dear 928Frenzy:
FYI, I was the one who came up with that name over five years ago and used it for the events known as the "928 Frenzy". I even had it as a personalize plate "928 FRNZ".

Please use the psuedonym in good health.

I think you were wise to stay away from this one. It is suspicious for a seller not to answer questions. I sell on ebay and answer all questions as quickly and honestly as possible. My feedback rating reflects good business practice and good customer service. It is definetly not normal, in my experience, to withold information from a potential buyer (unless you have something to hide!).

There's an 86 928 on e bay right now and the owner is more than forthcoming about the records and the cars history before even being contacted. That is the way an honest seller deals on E bay.

928 Brothers, my point? For all my love of 928's the cars simply did not hold their value. 993's for the most part did, hence the prices they command, whether someone pays it or not. The fact is, if you were to buy a 993 twin turbo you won't be the only *** in the country paying that price for it. Buy a 223 mile 928 GTS for 80 grand or more and they might as well put your picture in the dictionary next to the animal.

You have some good point's but some are way off. 95-96 993s are in the low to mid thirties. 99.9% of 94-95 928 GTSs are in the mid to high forties. This is a fact. So even though early 928s are not worth much, the later 928 GTSs are very expensive. 97-99 996s are even cheaper. So wich car really holds it's value?? The reason 993s and most 996s cost less than a 94-95 GTS is because they are COMMON CARS. Since the GTSs are so rare, they will always command a premium.

I always keep my eye on the market because it's what I do for a living, I buy and sell Porsches.

Red face

Hate to break anyone's bubble, but from what I've seen of most 928GTS', they are NOT holding their value. I know of at least one 93 GTS priced in the mid 20s, and I know of several 94s that are in the low to mid 30s. There were not that many 95s made, so I can't say what they would likely sell for, but personally, I wouldn't pay over $40k, period.

With regard to 993s or most other "P" cars, nearl ALL of them depreciate. A Porsche is still a car, and like most other cars, they are should be considered appliances that get used, and depreciate. That is reality.
