OK - apologies to Dr Bob - he was correct (my mistake...)

Your starter config. is different than the later cars and I was only just able to get a look at the diagrams again to see this (travelling).

The relay coil terminals 86 & 85 - when energized with 12v across them activate the relay switch & connect terminals 30 to 87.

In your case the ignition switch starter output goes to the 30 terminal and the 87 terminal feeds the starter solenoid. The 86 terminal goes to the ignition switch 'ignition' terminal and the 85 terminal goes to the transmission interlock & then to ground.

So this in not really a starter relay (as the later ones are) its a starter blocking relay. Sole purpose is to disable starting if the transmission is not in park(/neutral?).

So back to what you had seen:

With 87 & 30 linked the car starts. You have power on 86 (with ignition on) and no ground on 85.

This means the ignition switching is fine on starter and ignition outputs but that the relay never turns on because it sees no ground though the transmission interlock switch (open circuit).

So its the transmission interlock (safety) switch or its wiring/connectors you need to fix...

Does anyone have any advice for adjusting this neutral lockout switch? Not sure if it's adjustable or just replacable. Jason
