Question The Key to it all

Hi
My car has two keys, one black for the doors and hatch one red for the ignition. I assume the red one is due to a replacement ignition switch.
Two questions.

1. Can I modify the ignition lock to accept the black key? 928 keys are not exactly small and carrying two on a key ring would be a pain.

2. 928 keys are also more "chunky" that standard car keys. Does this mean that you cannot get replacements cut easily? Do you have to get them from Porsche and do they still make them?

Any advise would be appreciated

CT -

Usually there are 2 different keys...a longer one that is the 'owners' key and a shorter 'Valet' key.

It is likely that there was a swap of the ignition if the keys only work like you described.

A VERY FEW locksmith shops can cut duplicates...and they CAN be ordered through Porsche. Here in the states, you've got to provide prrof of ownership (vehicle registration) at the dealership for them to order...and delivery is 4-6 weeks.

Seems like a pain in the a$$..but these are VERY high security ignition locks...they can't be 'popped' and turned like most! I'm not sure - but I doubt that the locks could be 're-keyed' all the same without significant expense.

I ordered an extra key from Porsche and it didn't work on anything (doors, ignition, hatch). I found a shop locally (San Francisco) that was able to cut me a new key. It sticks a little in the gas cap but works flawlessly with everything else. If I remember correctly, 928 International says they can rekey locks on their website. I think I paid $40-$50 US for the new key.

My black and red keys work all the locks and ignition. There is no reason your black key shouldnt. The black key is longer and will activate the alarm when locking the driver door. The red key being shorter will not. That is the only difference i can discern from the two keys.

Thanks for your responces

Joe: How did Porsche know what key to cut? Did you have to give them a number? Or can they get it from the Chasis no.?

John: I don't have an alarm fitted to my car? I fulled one out but it didn't look like a OE fitment, more like a POS. Plus there are no alarm switches on the hood or hatch?

BTW I do actually have a third key that opens the little bo between the two rear seats. That seems kinda pointless to me. Why did they not just have one key for all the lock on the car? Maybe they realised that the box was fairly useless and thought no one would use it so having a different key wouldn't be noticed?

I ordered both keys from a Porsche dealer 2 months ago. The keys took less than a week to get cut, but they were not cut even close to correct (one look and it jumped out at you that they were not the same cut). The valet key worked in the doors and the hatch so I kept it (I have only one key).

The dealer made a photocopy of my key and has since gotten 2 keys from Atlanta where he says they cut them, neither has been correct.

Still hoping to someday have spare key, no locksmith I contacted had the correct machine to cut such a key.

I paid $110.00 for the two keys from Porsche.

Thumbs up

Best I can offer, is to see or call Tony Euganeo, he has a machine that cuts keys as you wait. I don't know if he does mailings, (I think he does) always met him at a show or swap meet. Copied my only key, and they worked great. Both copies. I don't know if he can rekey a lock, ask him. I think he charged me $25 for each key? He carries the lighted and non-lighted keys, BTW. A GREAT source for Porsche owners!

I ordered it through DEVEK and Porsche needed the VIN and copy of my registration (proof of ownership). Like others have posted, the key wasn't even close to working correctly. Try a local auto locksmith. The shop I went to had no problem cutting the new key. It took about 15 minutes.
