Post Choosing a 928

Hi all,

Been on the hunt for a 928. Found three that have caught my eye.
1. 1986.5 Red with tan interior. Has 100k+ miles. Five speed. Everything is stock with maintenance history good. Second owner. Daily driver car. T-belt & pump done 3000 miles ago. $10,000
2. 1985 Euro Black with black interior. Has unknown milage. Five speed. Dual exhaust, new clutch, t-belt & pump done, new batt and fan. Has no side molding! $8500
3. 1984 Euro Red with tan interior. Has 88,000 miles. Four speed auto. All leather option. Has wheels off of '99 Boxster. S4 headlights upgrade, limited slip diff. One owner car with all maintenance history, t-belt and pump also done recently. $9000

I prefer a red car and a five speed. I like the black one since it doesn't have the side moldings, but don't care for the color. The '86.5 should have the S4 suspension right? Is limited slip on option on those cars too. What are your thoughts?

I'd go for door #2 (85 Euro 5 speed).

It looks to me like #1 is screaming your name; they all are good but 1 seems to be just what you are looking for.

Greg & Jim V,

#1 is tempting cept it has more miles than #3 and two owners. Less HP to boot, granted that is only a 22 HP diff.

Jay,

Why the 85 Euro? It looks good but I can't imagine trying to keep that car clean, one little speck and I'd be out there polishing on it. Unknown milage is a concern too. #4 has limited slip, I like that feature.

Thanks for responding!

Can you put Boxster wheels on a 928? I had the understanding that they were different offsets.

I think you've already said in your first post, which one you really want.

# 3 does not fit yor requirements, so why not rule it out right away?

#2 sounds great, except the unknown mileage. Are there any reasonable estimates? And you don't like the black...

#1 has everything you want - 5-Speed, red with tan (very conservative, but like black/black good for resale), reasonable mileage, and most important maintenance items. I'd have a pre-purchase inspection done by a 928-experienced mechanic (visit <a href="http://www.eatel.net/~dslabat/mech.htm" target="_blank">http://www.eatel.net/~dslabat/mech.htm</a> to find one). If it checks out well, you might just live with the side moldings. I don't like them either, but will live with them until the car gets redone at some point in the future.

Best of luck!

PS: At 100+k miles the car should already have new shoks, and new motor mounts. If either is more than 60k miles old, budget for replacement.

The 86.5 will have the S4 brakes and suspension, but a limited slip is an option it may or may not have. BTW, the 84 has a non-interference engine, which may be a plus for folks who go farther and longer than the cam belt service guidlines recommend.

Even though it has more miles than the others, I think the 86.5 should be considered 'best'. Naturally, you should give tham all a thorough personal inspection and a even better would be a PPI for all three, if you can afford it. ;^) YMMV.

#3 Dude. The wheels & tires alone are worth $1500, and any non GTS 928 with stock wheels would look SO mcuh nicer with the updated 17" ones it has (they are 17", right?)

Also, they put all those automatics in these cars for a reason. I wanted a 5 speed too, I got a 3 sd. auto with limited slip diff. and love it. No clutch to worry about , no shared brake/clutch fluid, no syncro issues.

Plus those headlights... - Ruf

Ed,(or Nicole or Wally)

I thought that only the 78 and 79 cars were non-interfernace engines. If this is wrong, please clear up what engiens are interference ones. Thanks. - Ruf

It sounds like only one of those cars actually fits your preferences.

Be sure to get a good PPI before buying. If you're in Washington state I can get you in touch with my mechanic. You might also wish to stop by <a href="http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/PacNW928/" target="_blank">http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/PacNW928/</a> if you haven't already.

86.5 5 speed, that would be my choice. To check for the desirable limited slip rear end option, question the seller on option codes. They are located under the carpet in the hatch area. The 220 code designates LSD. If you get a list of the codes you can decipher them at 928gt.com in the technical reference section.

The price may be a little high, there is a red/tan 86.5 on ebay with 80k miles I think for about $8000. A nice 86.5 is worth 10k IMO though. Get that PPI done <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> make sure there aren't some big surprises in your near future.

Don't sweat the auto guys comments. Clutches are easy to replace in the 928 and synchros are not a problem on 85 and up cars. Have Fun

Thanks for the replies. A friend of mine told me to check everything and not to buy in haste. Basically to get the best maintained 928 with all the options you want, that is within your budget. Otherwise its like "shoulda, woulda, coulda". I'll still check them all. Maybe I'll even find a better one. Thanks again!

That is very sound advice. I continued to look at 928s for two months after finding the one I ended up buying. It was, as you say, a matter of finding the right car with the right options at the right price. The search is definately part of the fun <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
