Question about this ebay car
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...ksid=p3907.m32
I e-mailed the guy (maybe it's someone here?) and the pictures that came back are not at all very nice. Two dents on both sides of the car on the fenders. Looks like someone tried to repair it or something, it looks pretty awful. The interior has stains (it's a light color), some wear on the seats and the center console around the shifter area it "open", by which I mean on the passenger side there's a gap between the upper portion of the console and the sides. Also, I have noticed that on the passenger side is a Dunlop tire, and on the other side a yokohama.
So my question is, would you believe the seller when he says it's been well taken care of, driven carefully, and the mechanics are fantastic?

The timing belt seems to had lost it's will to live. That can be a real expensive undertaking yes?

Take your time. You'll find the right car. I looked for months and finally found one in LA. Count on spending some cash / sweat / cussing to get it up to suitable condition. I have been advised that a good body is what's important because you can replace or repair the mechanicals. Paint for a 928 around here can run into the ten thousand dollar range for a quality job plus rubber trim and gaskets.
On the other hand, my engine burns zero oil, has 200,000 miles on it, and still performs well. Keep looking because this doesn't seem like the right one for you if you are disgusted with poor body condition. Maybe you should be down at Sharktoberfest. looking there.....?
I paid $5600 for my car about 5 1/2 years and 75,000 miles ago. I expected to put about $3000 into it immediately. I expect about $2000 a year maitenance. All this to drive a supercar GT that would cost over $100,000 to buy new today. Look at it that way. I know of a great condition '86.5 w/only 120,000 miles on it in my area. Well maintained, great body with only one small miniscule ding in the lower front fender that could be removed with paintless dent removal and touched up, good interior. He wants $12,000 for it. If I had it I would plunk it down today and stash that car in my garage on stands for a rainy day. (no, I won't tell you where it is, 'cause I want it, and he is in no hurry to sell it. in fact you never heard of this. I was simply dreaming out loud.)

Well, if you play your cards right and hold out a little bit I think he may throw in the bridge and the Arizona oceanfront property to seal the deal.
"windshield-linear defect;two low fender dents; no mechanical problems;not smoked in Maintence/repairs: 2006: new Timing belt, 2005-brake relining 2007 ; A/C compressor,dryer;Engine-tune-up Rebuilt Engine 100 K
History of ownership-original owner;Driven very carefully=witness totally only brake lining was at 230,000 miles Accidents-none"
"8 pictures has been sent to him today"
Ack. Why am I so suspicious of internet ads with poor grammar? I should be more understanding. After all, no scammer in his right mind is going to offer a 257,000 mile car as bait, right? This actually may be the original owner as claimed- run a Carfax.
This car should not have been listed with a reserve, IMO.

Ron_H, where did you say that car was....interior is probably great....california???
I bought a car off ebay this month. I was lucky. Truely, lucky. I agree with others..description is poor. When were the "8" pictures he sent you taken. Pleae be patient. Wait for "your" car. Read everything you can on this forum, and bookmark it, read it again. I have found that there are alot of folks here that will help you.
Good Luck.

Here is a '86.5 5speed listed as a '85. Dealership and they still want a bit much for it IMHO.

When purchasing on Ebay I found this works. Redefine the terms of sale.
Send the seller an e-mail and state that you'll only bid over $x000 if he agrees to these conditions on the sale (1) a post-purchase PPI at your expense and choice of dealer, (2) your option to cancel the purchase if the PPI shows more than $x000 in maintenance or repairs are needed for safe, reliable driving (option so you can renegotiate), and, if t-belt is due, his warranty that it will make it into your mechanic's garage. If the price is over $15,000, he'll take the deal. At least my seller did. If the seller balks, he knows something bad about the car. It costs nothing to ask.

Ron_H where's that car? Seriously if it's a 5sp I'm in the market and willing to travel for the right car. I've been looking at that 86.5 on ebay that's listed as an 85, bid a couple times. It looks pretty good but he definitely wants too much, and it's been relisted at least three times.

I looked at the 85 on Craigslist today. It had been rearended and both rear bumper shocks are collapsed, a decent black paint respray, the front bumper panel also shows impact damage. The engine is partially dismanteled and in the hatchback. The interior is in poor to average condition. IMO $500 max.
