I just had a new key made at the dealer. I lost the only one I had. The key will turn the ignition, with difficulty, and open the doors with difficulty, will turn on the alarm easily, but will not open the hatch back. The dealer insists the key is correct and will not recut. There is an alarm, which the dealer says is factory installed, but which I have been led to believe, is not. Since there was a fob attached to the lost key with buttons to de-activate the alarm, which seems to activate by its own will. I would think the best solution is to fix the hatch release, but the dealer seems powerless to fix it. They simply say there is a short in the wiring, and it would be too costly to try and repair. That's fine. But I think I would like to have somebody look at it and attempt a repair. I have no faith in the dealer. I live in N.J. Brick New Jersey. Anyone know either of the solution to the key problem or who might be able to repair the hatchback.

Welcome. I'm over in Point Pleasant, less than 20 minutes from you. Roger from 928sRus just PM-ed me your phone number and I'll try to give you a call tomorrow. Unfortunately I can't recommend a mechanic in the area because I do my own work, but there may be someone who can chime in about that.
There are a few of us 928ers in the area and hopefully one of us can figure out and fix the problem. I haven't worked on the rear hatch lock or alarm, but there are lots of people on here who have, and I'm willing to have a go at it if you are.

Go to a good locksmith and have them recut the key. I had one made by the dealer - didn't work at all. Had two made by a locksmith - no problems. I also had the factory alarm disabled. It caused nothing but problems.

If you only got 1 key cut by the dealer, take some hi-res photos of it and go check out keys4classics.
I've seen them praised here a few times, and sent them a mail recently - they can cut on original blanks that fit the original lighted key heads (I think they get the blanks from 928intl?). I'll be getting a second long-key, and a red short key imminently

Nah.. semi-useable just means the edge tolerances aren't quite accurate for the key code (928 keys are profiled based on a numerical code). The fact that it works at all says the key is the right shape, just not quite filed to spec.
keys4classics "reads" the key to establish the code, then cuts for the code, so what he should end up with is a correctly cut version of the same key, rather than a poorly cut one.

The key sounds as it has been cut incorrectly on one side. Keys4classics will cut it to the right code gained from one side and do a new key with both sides correct.

keys4classics is the way to go. They will also keep your code so you will never have to worry about it again. I had them make one for me with their standard key blank. It worked perfectly so I sent them an original 928 blank to cut and it also worked great.

roger: The curious occurance. I found the original. It was in the 944. I don't know. So I am ok key wise. But when I took it out the other day it began to stall. This sort of thing nearly always happens after a visit to the dealership. I had the lights on in the rain and there was a visable drop on the battery charge indicator. But I got a call from Mike Fry (tk) and he and a couple of his buddies are going to meet with me and we will consider the variety of problems this car has. Many Many thanks for your help.
