1986 idle adjust location
hello, I am a bit frustrated....I have been trying to find the idle adjustment screw ( I hear it's an allen head) on my 1986. I am trying to test the idle stab. by by-passing and adjusting the idle (it currently runs too low when cold and a bit too fast when warmed up).
I tried to take the center air tube off and look down. I checked both on the pas. and drivers side around the throttle body.... I could not find it.
Any ideas where it may be ?
thanks, tom

On mine it's a 6 or 7 mm hex head bolt. You'll need to put a jumper in the connector on the front top of the engine (forget what it's called) and then you can adjust it and remove the jumper. You shouldn't have to remove anything, just reach down in between the intake.
I can't sent pics right now, but if no one has any I can try to get the pages from the manual that you need and paste them in.
You should also make sure all the intake clamps are on tight and the rubber is in good shape because leaks in the intake will cause all kinds of rough running and idle issues.

Here is another one of those Gems I saved from WallyP!
The USA/Japan 32-valve engines use a computer-controlled "idle speed charging control", commonly called the idle stabilizer valve. The '87 - up cars use a different type of valve to do the same thing.
You might want to try setting your idle speed.
Look on the top center of the engine, just under the cross-brace, and find a 1 1/2" cap covering a three-pin electrical connector. The pins are at ten o'clock, two o'clock and six o'clock.
With the engine warm, A/C off, put a temporary jumper between the pins at two and six. This disables the idle speed charging control. Set the idle speed to 660 - 700 rpm by adjusting the bypass screw located on the throttle housing. You get to the screw by going down between the first and second air tubes on the passenger (USA) side. Remove the jumper wire.
The idle should now stay steady almost regardless of conditions - hot, cold, A/C on, A/C off, etc. If it doesn't, the idle stabilizer valve may be bad or dirty. The idle stablilzer valve is located under the intake manifold at the back of the engine, just to the passenger (USA) side.
