Well - thanks to some of the posts here, I changed from my Goodyear Eagle GS-C's to Yokohama AVS-100's. I found a set of S4 rims on eBay that gave me the 8" wide rears so I went with 245/45-16's on the back and 225/50-16's on the front.
I hated the Eagles - they were EXTREMELY noisy and rough. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! The Yoko's make this a whole new ride...they are VERY quiet - I can hardly tell the difference in driving surfaces now. They also seem to stick as well, or maybe even better than the Eagles. In fact, with the old eagles, I'd get some spin when going WOT on a 1st-2nd shift <img border="0" alt="[bigbye]" title="" src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" /> (4-speed auto...)...NOT SO with the Yokos..very solid 'bite'.
Additionally - I don't get that 'wander' (automatic steering!)with road ruts/grooves.
From Tirerack.com...the 225's were $79 and the 245's were $99...plus very reasonable (and quick!) shipping.
I got the Khumos and I think they are pretty good. Not outstanding, but a good tire for the price. They are quiet, reasonably sticky, and seem to be lasting quite well. I cannot tell much difference between these, and the last set of Yokohamas I had on my car. Before that, Pirellis. I think all 3 tire brands were pretty similar, except for the prices.
Once you get really sticky rubber, the price goes up, and the life of the tire goes down...
Not really worth it, unless you are racing on a regular basis.
