Post Looking for better hot water valve

Hey fellow sharkies,

I remember seeing something about a replacement metal hot water valve that would be better than that plastic contraption we use.
I replaced mine two week ago and my AC had never been better. Today, hot air started to come through the vents again.

I looked through the archives but couldn't find the reference to the metal replacement. Anyone have a part number or where to find it.

Thanks

Paul

What about a Chrysler unit. I seem to remember seeing on that was vacuum controlled and made from metal.

On my 944, I use an Audi 5000 valve. $15 at my local, all metal. The heat works great too.

Remember that the 928 valve fails to hot - that is, vacuum turns the valve off.
Many vacuum-controlled valves use vacuum to turn the valve on.

Really? My understanding is that most if not all of them fail to hot, so if nothing else you have a defroster. Same reason the vacuum control for the ventilation fails to defrost mode.

FWIW the Audi unit fails to hot.

Thanks for the imput guys,

I also found a reference of another valve on John Pirtle's excellent site. That one, while also made of plastic is apparently sturdier and readily available at NAPA so I'll check out if it fails to hot.

What about the outlet size on these alternatives? Do they match up with the 928 hose?

I looked at John Pirtle's site, the 928 valve appears to be the same valve I replaced (easily) with the metal Audi 5000 valve on my 944S2. His generic valve looks like an easy fitment as well, but has a plastic body (probably no big deal.)
Great site BTW:

Hey all,

little update on the water valve thing. I bought the generic one from NAPA. It does fail open just like the Porsche valve but the connectors are a bit smaller. Not enough to cause a problem in my opinion but I haven't tried it yet. The body is plastic, but the mechanism is internal.

As it turns out, my new valve might be good. I discovered that my blue/black valve was leaking a bit and while changing it realized that the rubber cross was way past it's prime. So there might not have been enough vacuum to close the hot water valve even if good.

As for that rubber cross, I learned that it's only available as part of $120.00 kit <img border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" title="" src="graemlins/cussing.gif" />
The guys at 928 Specialist are sending me a 5 way connector instead and I'll just either plug the extra hole or use it to mount a permanent vacuum gauge.

More to come.

Paul
