I agree --sounded like a heavy gauge balloon exploding. Weird!

Thx for the support.

I think you idle problem may be related to a vacuum leak or a poor connection with the MAF or ignition control unit. If the engine isn't missing I doubt you will find a problem with either the distributor or plugs. just my .02

Dr. Bob, thanks for correcting me. I was thinking that the flow from the radiator would show up as it does in VW tanks.
Thanks Paul --I'll poke around and see if I may have knocked something loose and pray that this won't be another needle in the haystack troubleshooting session.

So I believe I've nailed down the cause of my hose bursting: faulty radiator cap

Thanks Rog, for reminding me of this cause/effect relationship --I think the last time this happened to me it was on a girlfriend's Audi Fox back in 1987 --wow, 20 years ago.

Update:

So I'm pretty sure I figured out the problem.

It turns out the MAF is cracked (was when I bought the car). The top crossbar where the air intake connects is completely broken off --I knew about this, but didn't realize what I was dealing with --looks like the MAF is cracked completely down the side, and I'm guessing when the hose burst and all that coolant hit it, it either cracked more or something else went haywire.

Now to replace it. Anything I should know before I start?
