What coolant are you all running in your radiators that's phosphate free and safe for use in the S4? Mike

We run the 5 year extended life orange coolant which is compatible with aluminum engines and mix that in a 50/50 ratio with distilled water and a bottle of "Water Wetter." We live in Florida and this combo has done very well for us. Even better since the radiator was replaced with a OE Behr unit.

Did a full flush and have been using the Zerex G05 formula, 1 gallon in distilled water (about 35% +/-) plus a bottle (or two) of Water Wetter. It doesn't freeze here, so the protection is for the water pump bearings and seal only. I could easily get away with distilled water and Water Wetter only, with no coolant at all I suspect. But the little bit of summer boilover protection is nice.

I guess this needs a better explanation for some...

Radiator was replaced at over 105K miles due to the passenger O-ring finally springing a leak and I decided to replace the whole unit at that time. Did not want to risk repairing the one o-ring and then the other would decide to let go. This had nothing to do with the coolant mix, this is a very common failure for 928s.

While I was there, I cleaned out the whole area underneath the radiator which had become a repository for leaves and other road debris. Also noticed the old radiator cooling fins on the bottom half were very occluded from the dirt and debris over it's life. Once a new unit was placed into the car the coolant temp, as registered by the instrument gauge, dropped by over a quarter needle sweep.

This is what happened when I initially changed out the old fluid the first time with the old radiator. The same coolant mix and the new radiator made it even better.

Cheers,
Constantine

Fly Navy

I'm running Prestone Extended Life. It's phosphate free. When I did my water pump last year, I searched here on the forums for info and got tons to sift though. I pulled the block drain plugs and flushed the whole system with fresh water. Since I've also got a Mercedes 500E with similar 4-cam aluminum engine, I buy for both cars. Mobil 1 15W-50 and Prestone Ext. Life.

I read about Dex Cool, but heard that it can gel up if combined with other products.

Please don't be offended. I use the same combo as you and swear by it. I just didn't want to be the only one to enjoy your choise of words.
I hope this doesn't mean I won't get my clamp when the time comes.

Hi Charley,

I should have put a smiley at the end of the sentence you qouted. I really don't use them much and guess I should.

I just wanted to be sure after you made your point (got to be more careful) that Fly Navy did not think my choice of fluids had something to do with the radiator going bad.

As far as the clamp order, of course not! By the way, clamp batch #3 being ordered this week!

Kind regards,
Constantine
