It's good to hear that DaveT's car shifts well with a short-shift...knowing it's possible with the older cars is encouraging. Mine is still extremely notchy and stiff making downshifts completely impossible, and occasionally preventing 1st gear even when stopped. And I'm someone who likes heel/toe on every single shift and it really detracts from driving a car I otherwise love. I don't think it has much to do with the short shifter, but I'm going to swap in the stock shifter to help diagnose the problem. My front cup is fine, rear coupler is also good, so I'm left with the clutch and gearbox as sources. I'll be flushing, bleeding and adjusting the clutch this afternoon to get it as solid as possible and hopefully that will solve the problem. Otherwise I'm looking at the gearbox itself, which is a rebuilt unit from 928intl just a couple years old. If it means digging into that, then I'll probably just pull it and install a later unit with limited-slip.

I ended up shortening the shifter in the SilverBulit several years ago and love it!! It is actually about 3/4 of an inch shorter than a GTS shifter. It would probably cause ploblems if I had a center cassette console, but the 79's did NOT have them, so your arm basically lays on the carpet. I did this along with the black GTS shift boot right after I had the front and rear ball cups done.
All I can say is that it way night and day!! Shifts became a flick of the wrist instead of a pull of a long lever. Absolutely love it!!

The Charlie Car is sloppy as hell!!! Front and Rear shift cups are shot and the shifter is loose as a goose. I'll get that fixed and replace the shifter as well, because as it stands right now, the 79 is much more pleasurable to shift than the GTS!!!

A few pics of the shifter in the SilverBulit.

I replaced old PO shortened shifter from a short shifter from Roger. Big improvement. However, still sloopy. I then replaced the rear coupler and readjusted the shifter (was to far towards driver's side). Next will be the front shifter ball cup from Carl.

Now, it is very tight, second will grind some until it warms up, then it is very smooth. I need to change the oil in the tranmission and differencial as I have no record of the last time that was done. Just need to fine the hex key size to remove plugs.

After comparing the shifters, not only are they shorter but, they slightly change the throw.
