I now have a dark spot that affects the right side of the info center and the left side of the trip odometer. Is this a bulb that can be replaced or is it something worse?
IIRC there are 6 bulbs - 3 or red and 3 are amber.
That could be the problem or the unit is failing.

Find Shocki's post on 15 minute pod removal. It takes a bit longer in my car, but eliminates the need to remove a bunch of crap. You have to be pretty good about knowing what you are doing and have patience.
I have had my instrument cluster out so many times over the last 6 months experimenting that I lost count. You may want to wait until I do my LED lighting post for the car interior before you pull the pod. You may want to make the change over. If not, a great alternative is to head to an import house that sells VW parts. The bulb bodies/holders are exactly the same and there are more wattages to choose from. The bulbs you need (8 clear bulbs total, 4 of them have red latex covers you can pull off and use on the new ones, ) are 1.5 watt/yellow base. Get the VW 2 watt/green base. They are a tad brighter and show quite well with the LCD. If you are in there, I would freshen up all of the main lighting. Turn your key to the #2 position (0 being off) and make sure ALL of the lighting works. this is a check mode and everything except your parking and bright light should be lit ( I think thats it) replace what is needed.
Going LED is the best possible solution for the main back lighting in my opinion. You can see your gauges incredibly clearly during the day...even with the sun in your eyes! At night they make a vivid clear display with a fresh cool white look, not a faded yellow glow. LED's will last longer than you will own the car too.
Once you remove your pod using Shocki's procedure there's really no need to remove the steering wheel since it just adds time to the procedure and the cluster comes out easily enough with the steering wheel left in place.
