Lower Hood Latch

So there I was...deep in the woods last week about to enjoy some fly fishing after a nice drive on some 50 miles of two lanes roads - mountains, trees and all. I meet up with my fishing buddies and they suggest to look at disabling the 928 by pulling a coil wire. Made sense to me not to loose my pride and joy and hoof it miles to the nearest sign of civilization. Then the lower hood latch wouldn't lock....![banghead](https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/banghead.gif)

After fishing I limped SLOWLY to town and bought nature's two sure cure-all's: Duct Tape (designer black!) and WD40. The lube didn't help so I carefully taped the front down and drove home. After researching the possiblity of an 18lb hood flying off, I'm not so sure I would have tried that..but I was 100 miles from home.
Anyway, took appart the offending lower latch and learned that over time the unit had fatigued, causing the latch to move away from its pivot point. The spring was pulling it around rather then allowing it to close against the uper pin properly. You can really tell in the pics how far the spring pull the latch versus the last one where the case has the tabs reset. I guess this is the toll of slamming the hood for 19 years. I did order a new one from 928Intl (thanks!) since an old unit would likely go again.
Hope this helps others with latch issues.

Have you tried pushing the hood release lever forward to make sure it's not stuck in the open position? Sometimes they can stick and keep the latch open.

Yep...tried everything when it happened. I noticed in the process my hood was slightly off alignment which goes a long ways to explain why the latch malfunctioned too. Oh well...live and learn right.

It took a minute to figure out what your were talking about regarding tab fatigue. So, for any other slowpokes like me, here's an annotated image. Excellent photos of the problem.

You'll see in the 2nd to last photo that once the 3 retaining tabs are re-tightened AND the latch positioned correctly, there was no need to bend anything. When it was loose, the spring actually pulled it around and made the latch look bent and also unable to catch the latch pin.
From above you see in the same picture, how the latch now is visible and I'll wager a new latch that the tabs will be more likely to loosen again repeating the same problem and besides they are only $45 or so.

Oh, so I was I wrong about the large tab. The three small tabs that hold the lower latch plate needed to be snugged up. Do I have that right?
