Default AFC Troubles

Okay, I have posted previously about the 82 US that I bought and was trying to get running. Tonight, I determined that py manually operating the i AFC flap when starting, I was able to start and keep the car running.

I pulled the AFC and did the tests on page 24-21 of the manual. All of the tests are good to go .

So, am i looking for a manifold leak? My guess would be yes. Looking for confirmation.

Thanks!

Ok, so I went out and had my wife turn the car over while visually inspecting the trapdoor and it doesn't move a bit. It's gotta be sucking air somewhere. I guess next step would be to use incense or something to see if i can locate the leak.

Do you have spark, fuel and is the timing correct?

So the answer is yes, yes and yes. Basically the problem is no fuel when attempting to start due to the AFC not moving because the intake is sucking air from elsewhere. I just ordered hardware to do an R&R on the intake while i have it off hunting for leaks. Hopefully this goes off without a hitch.

Thanks

I don’t think this is a vacuum leak issue.

When you go the engine running, how long did it run? There is a cold start injector that will give enough fuel to get the engine running for a few seconds but then if the main injectors don’t come on line, the engine will stall. I had this problem on my’83 and it was directly related to a bad fuel injection relay. You can test the relay by removing the cover and squeezing the contact by hand. If the engine start and keeps running then you know what the problem is. As soon as you let got of the bad relay, the engine should stall.

It runs for as long as I let it run (with the door opened manually), up to 3 or 4 minutes at one time. I always shut it down, it doesn't shut off on it's own. When I watch the trap door, with my wife starting the car, it does not move at all.... I already jumped the XVI relay early on in the troubleshooting process (with a 'Y' wire from 30 to both 87's). So the real question becomes, should the flap be moving from the get-go, and if so, where is the air coming from, and if not, what do I need to do to get the mixture correct at starting?

I can't remember the exact layout of the '83 but there is an air valve that is used during warm up and to control idling. I beleive they are a bi-mtal design. Check it and see if it opens and closes when the egnine is cold. Was the car like this when you bought it?

Yes, i bought it non running. I think you might be onto something with the air valve... i will have to check that out. It's the assembly that feeds into the cold start assembly from the base of the throttle body, right?

Does the aux air valve open at cold start, or does it open when the car heats up?

sounds like TempII sensor could be bad
(edit, only if you were prying the AFM open with a screwdriver with the AFM off the "U" )

so, if it is not moving and you need to pry it open to have it run, it could be false air or clogged injectors. does it run smootly when you pry the AFM open? how much are you opening it? can you flood it out if you open it too far (this shouldnt be too hard to do if it is functioning properly)

It runs smoothly when I open it up. It is also still connected at the U. I haven't tried to flood it, but it does pick up rpm's the wider I open the flap...

Idle switch is out of adjustment. I can reach down and push on the bottom switch and make it click, which tells me that at the zero throttle position, it is not triggering the switch. I did manage to get the car to run tonight by jamming the flap until the motor got hot. Once the motor was warmed up, it would start if I gave it throttle. Still won't idle, but i suspect that the Prior - Prior Owner (the one who gave it to Scott Mohr as payment for work) messed with the idle mixture and idle speed settings when he should have checked the idle switch. Scott told me that he never even tried to get it running. That will be my mission for tomorrow. Thanks again everyone for all of the help.

Problems solved. The intake was sucking air. I tore it off and replaced the throttle body boot and the 8 intake boots and replaced all of the vaccuum lines and the car idles perfectly.
