Our fuel pumps are lubricated by the gas they pump. You will shorten the life of the fuel pump by running out of gas.

As to the low volts reading: There is an adjustment pot on the side of the voltmeter. Put a multimeter to the battery, start the car and adjust the pot 'til you are in synch with the multimeter. I did this before my trip to SITM and it worked great. But, it took a bit of time getting used to the gauge reading higher.
