Removing film from rocker panels

Hi Folks,
My 928 has some sort of clear protective film on the rocker panels that I want to remove. It's seen better days and now looks pretty bad, with bubbles, peels, and so on. It almost looks like the rocker panels are shedding...
I don't know if this was a standard or aftermarket application, but my guess is that it must be the latter. Has anyone had any experience removing this sort of thing from a 928 or other car? Or do you know where I might look for information on this sort of thing. A search on Google and some car-care sites is obviously in order for me here.
It will peel off, but only in tiny ragged patches, and I'd probably go nuts trying to remove it that way. I can also get some of it off using a high-pressure spray at a car wash, but even that doesn't work. Are there any solvents that might work on the film but not damage the paint? I tried using some denatured alcohol as this will work on many things, but the film seems to be impervious to it.
Thanks!

3M makes a "tape removal" spray that helps to remove tape, stick-on decals, etc., without hurting the paint. Perhaps an application of that followed by the high-pressure water. Should be available at most parts stores, if not, try an auto paint/body shop supply.

Skip, on my 82 I have that same stone/chip guard. It too was peeling in one area. I scraped back to where it no longer would come off easily. Then I bought some fast dry underbody spray from K-Mart. They sell the slow dry stuff also so get the fast dry (I think that they call it Body Shop quality or something) But I re-sprayed the bad area and gave it a day to dry and painted over it and it's a good match. As for removing it like Dave said. Heat gun. One more thought. If you do re-spray it I bet you could use a small roller to apply the paint. It's already textured so the roller might work. <img src="graemlins/a_smil17.gif" border="0" alt="[blabla]" />
