Default Gas Cap

Recently I acquired a new gas cap and I am trying to figure out how to remove the red outer shell from the inner white piece so I can rekey it. I have read the following link:

http://www.928.org.uk/mambo/content/view/56/59/

which states that all one needs to do is simply jam a screw driver to push the red tabs away from the core. Well after two hours of jamming small, medium and large screwdrivers into this cap I'm no closer to getting this bloody thing off. I noticed on a few older posts that some others had the same problem, could some one share what they did, before I use a blow tourch to vent my frustration at such a simple little gas cap

It helps if you have warmed the cap first in hot water.

I finaly got it off, using two medium screwdrivers, small needle nose vice grips and some wd-40. My solution was to spray it down with wd-40, jam two tabs together with the screw drivers and use the vice grips to pull out the insert. It only took a minute to do.

Wow - sounds like you are now the expert here.

I have done this but it was a royal PITA... I thought a 3 leg spider tool would be most useful - I considered trying to make one - eventually got it off without - but sounds like you now have a pretty quick technique for this...

Tell us more... for next time....

Shadow, I have the same problem with my buddy's fuel cap but more with the key cylinder. I'm trying to remove only the cylinder so that I can have it re-keyed. I suspect I may have to start by separating the housing with the white insert as you already did.

Yes - the same - there is no other (non destructive) way to get it out.

Its a small white rectangular bit of plasitc that connects to the key cylindar. If anyone knows where I can get one it would be greatly appreciated. The link shows the bit im refering to. https://rennlist.com/forums/attachme...1&d=1182493326
