this might be another stupid question but since i took the intake tubes off would it be possible to just put 2 cone filters on the ends where the intake tubes are supposed to go from the airbox? i have a bunch laying around from previous cars which i never used and would fit there k an n but didnt know if thatd make a difference or not and also maybe put a small breather filter on each of the timing chain holes where the intake tubes would go again not sure if itd make a difference but im saying i have the parts already so figured id ask

Good trading!

Ignore the thread hijackers and get your car running.

A old 928's required dosage of "a little TLC" is usually enough $$$ to buy several Bradleys and wrecked BMWs...

Cliff Notes of 928 Power Adders for US-spec 16v:

1) Euro top-end: intake, throttle body, heads, cams, all of which are RARE, used, and expensive - and take some serious wrenching to swap onto your car.

2) Supercharger kit: new and expensive, but less wrenching for a lot more HP.

now what if you combined option 1 with option 2 that could possibly yield some serious power huh?

A lot of ppl have tried to use econo-box hot-rodding methods on these cars and tried many different intake box things - almost all of which LOSE power. The stock 928airbox has excellent flow and the rest of the engine is tuned to it.

Remember, this was in it's day the flagship of one of the most engineering-intensive car companies in the world. Their stock equipment is in many cases superior to aftermarket.

The breather holes to the timing belt don't need filters if you're not off-road rallying.

Good used parts are the way to go. It’s a win-win situation for both the vendor and the buyer.

What I would do Layton is ditch the cats for a Y pipe and get a decent muffler set up from Jim B. Your engine will rev. better, and sound a lot more serious. Do some maintenance, and make sure the car is tuned up. Get a K&N filter for the stock intake if you want, but realize that no one has actually improved on the stock set up. Make sure your suspension is good. Easy to upgrade the shocks and springs.

As for the more power thing, the first step is always to optimise the stock setup. A good 80 928 may not be a rocket, but it is still a reasonably quick and fast car. Once you have it set up well that is. Of course the 911 brigade will tell you that the biggest performance gains will come from tightening up the nut behind the wheel. Join the PCA and do some track days. Guys with tiny motors will often blow the doors off of the big gun latest and greatest mobiles.

Tune the car first. Then tune the driver. Then make your upgrades.

He's in NY, (if he's in NY) he's got smog to worry about, though I don't know whether they care about visual (I left NY 20 yrs ago). Can a de-catted '80 pass smog?
