Post Leaking gas tank- drip drip

My '81 euro is leaking fuel. The leak is at the bottom of the tank where a hose comes out. When the car is not running I can see a drop of gas just hangning there. When car is running it drips rather fast. I checked and the filler hose and that's not it. I think it must be the fuel pump line. Does this hose crack and leak or could it be a seal where it meets the tank? Any advice on repair is very much appreciated.

Flormat,
Most properly a bad hose.
All the hose connection are at the topside of the tank
If that's only when totally full, that is the vent hose, but as you describe it sound like it is the pressure or return line.
Try to recognise from where the drips comes, first remove the cover for the pump and filter maybe there, if not, remove your tank, and that will be relative easy to find the failure.

Have you checked the actual pump and filter to make sure the connections are tight? Not sure if this could be a cause.

Where in Michigan are you?

Big dave, I'm in Jackson, MI. Are you nearby?
It sure looks like it's coming from the bottom. It looks like there is a line that goes into the bottom with a seal where it goes in. If I can figure out how to post pictures on here I snap one to show. Thanks, for the response, I'll take another look.

Cool

Yeah- there is a panel that detaches from the fuel tank that allows you to see the pump and filter.

It almost looks like a woman's bra- two straps that go up the tank and end with bolts, and then a section that actually covers the "goodies"-

[Y'all don't go anywhere with this...I'm trying to be serious for a change...]

Un-bolt this and remove. CAREFULLY, using two wrenches, tighten the all the connections. I had a constant drip for a while until I did this...

Flormat:

Royal Oak is about 10 miles north of Detroit, which I believe is roughly 90 minutes from you in Jackson.

I suppose I'll have better luck if I buy her dinner before I try to get my hands up there.

I should probably drain the fuel too.
Thanks Eric, Dave, Normy

Yeah Dave, I know where Royal Oak it. If there is a meet in MI let me know, I'd love to get together with other Porsche lovers in this area. Nobody knows what these cars are in my area. My neighbor asked if my 944 was a Beracuda. I haven't spoken with him since. just kidding- we still speak.

Flormat,

Do you live near I-94? Maybe bring your Shark up next weekend for the Dream Cruise.

Talking

Flormat,
No, you do not need to drain the tank - drive it almost empty and then 'go ahead'

Yes, Jackson is right on I-94. Where is the Dream Cruise located? I'd like to hear more info on this...

If you haven't found Tony's site yet, it's great for photos.

Assuming that your year isn't dramatically different, this gives a pretty good view of the cover and what you'll find underneath:

Good luck.

Flormat:

The Dream Cruise runs up and down Woodward Avenue through Ferndale, Royal Oak, Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, etc. It's about 16 miles in all.

Reports are that 30,000 cars (most are classic, some are ricey, others are just stuck in the traffic) and 1,000,000 people show up.

It's pretty damn hard to miss, even if you want to. <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

(My apologies for posting this info in 2 different threads at the same time)

Flormat,

The Woodward Ave. Dream cruise in a nutshell:

30 miles of muscle, import, race, and otherwise exotic cars. Both sides of the road. Consider it the gearhead equivalent of heaven. For the weeks leading up the event, there are drag races all night, and parties all day. The day of the cruise will show the largest collection of autos ANYWHERE! No joke. Ask Big Dave for the date, but I believe it is a week from this Saturday.

Shawn's right.

For the past, I dunno, 8 weekends, at about 6 pm or so, the parking lots on the south-bound of Woodward has become a showcase of Concours-quality muscle cars while the street itself turns into a drag strip. I've been visiting and parking my car just to take in the scenery. Not many Porsche so I get some attention.

Cracked me up when the wife of a Shelby Cobra owner said, right in front of him, that I was driving her dream car

Of course, I live so close it's easy for me to make up excuses to go drivin (Honey, we're out of milk AGAIN?)
