Post Ouch!

Last month's Classic and Sports Car magazine did a nice write up on the 928 as a budget supercar. This month, they print a letter from a guy from NY who writes:

"...puzzled this time by your recommending that great money-pit, the Porsche 928. While it is widely regarded in the US as one of the best performing GT cars, it is also widely regarded as one of the best ways to commit financial suicide. Parts for a 928 here are scarce, exhorbitantly expensive (almost 1K for a water punp!) or simply unobtainable. Good 928 mechanics, always hard to find, are now truly an endangered species. While it runs, a 928 is certainly lots of fun. But as soon as something goes pop you'd better throw the beast away before it sucks your bank account dry."

Right. Whatever. Throw me a 91GT beast, won't run cause the fuel pump relay went pop, please. Besides, what are bank accounts for anyway?

Just goes to show us all that you have to own a 928 to know one. Thoes out of the "know" serve us, and all of mankind, by simply keeping their opinions where they belong, to themselves

Cool

What's wrong with being celibate? My shark gets all the money left over after paying the ex-wife, and my dog gives me all the attitude, I can put up with.

He sounds like my father-in-law "Porsche designed these cars to be maintained by Porsche engineers only".

Ernest,

If it's not bad enough that I have a tempermental German car, I have a temper"mental" German dog.

Anyone who has owned a Weimaraner will tell you they're a handful. <img border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" title="" src="graemlins/cussing.gif" /> He has already ruined two relationships. <img border="0" alt="[crying]" title="" src="graemlins/crying.gif" />

The advice I always tell people when they think about getting a 928, is that they are great cars, and a great deal. But since it is a used car, it *will* have problems. And they should not expect that a Porsche's water pump will be cheap. Nor should they be surprised by the cost of an engine rebuild. If they are going to buy a Porsche, it is a superb deal for the car you get. But they should be fully prepared for pricey repairs.

I kind of assume that instead of a $400/mo car payment, I have to pay a $400/mo investment towards future repairs, upgrades, and upkeep. But I still have a cooler and faster car than most new cars out there, and I am happy with it...

Signs of impending disappointment for a new 928 owner:

"I spent every nickel I had to buy my shark, I hope it doesn't need any repairs for a while, I'm broke"

"I've never worked on a car myself, I don't even own basic tools"

"I got a great deal. Sold my reliable daily driver because I only have one outdoor parking space at my apartment building. All I own now is the 928."

"I know nothing about mechanical stuff. I did find a mechanic who say's he's seen a 928, but never really had to work on one. He does speak with a cool foreign accent and has foreign cars sitting around his shop."

"I hear the good thing about German cars is that they're built like tanks. I mean, drive the wheels off it for a couple hundred thousand miles and maybe change the oil now and then"

"Sure, the parts are a bit expensive, when you need Porsche originals. So, I save where I can by using generic motor oil, budget coolant, heck, I just snagged a used timing belt off Ebay, in case I ever need one, but I doubt I'll change the timing belt unless it breaks or something."

"$350.00 for shop manuals? I don't think so. I'll just guess and try to apply MY extensive knowledge which gained by fixing the family lawn mower for years."

"Come on, I only paid $6,000 for this car. I'm not dumping $2,000 in preventive maintenence parts into it...........(hot chick walks by)."hey baby, this was a $70,000.00 car not long ago!!!" (see the irony)

And the number one sign of impending disapointment for a new 928 owner is......"Rennlist, Big 3?, never heard of them!"

Hey, I like folks who think like him! Some of them buy a 928, spend lots of money fixing them up, become disillusioned and get rid of it cheap. Some of us have been lucky to buy our 928s from folks like him. Besides, do we really want people like him owning a 928 for very long? :^( YMMV.
