Top of oil pan

Top of oil pan
Well the 82 shark is at the mechanic's shop for the tb change and regular service. I droped by today to have a look see and ask how it was going. He said that he had to remove the oil line that goes to the top of the oil pan to get to something and that the bolt on the drivers side of the flange was shorter and did not feel as good going back into the hole. Is this bolt supposed to be shorter than the other?

Chucker, took mine out today, unless your 82 is different, mine are the same length. The tube has to be removed for the T/belt change. As for "not feeling good" going back in, I think you already know the answer to that one. Good Luck.

Anthony, I am not sure what the answer is. He suggested a sleeve. I am not a 928 mechanic and that is why I asked him to do this. He believes that the bolts were the same length and that the last person to work on it, did this. My question is... Does a sleeve solve the problem and will there be any chance of metal shavings being introduced into the engine oil? Or is this a mute point? I do not understand what a sleeve is.

There can be more than one solution. All can/may get metal shavings into the pan. He can run a tap of the correct thread size (sometimes works)through the existing threads, he can insert a helicoil (insert,"sleeve")or he can drill it out to a larger size and tap new threads. Unfortunately all have the possibility of getting shavings(metal)in the oil pan. Anyone else with other ideas?

Thanks Anthony for the quick response. I think that he might want to see if it holds as is. The car did not leak before this and I will know exactly where to look if it does. Kind of one of those things where I was not there to know how the bolt felt when it came out and when it went back in. So it's his call and I'm glad that he was honest and told me about it. <img src="graemlins/yltype.gif" border="0" alt="[typing]" />
