Default Painting S4 wing

Just finished painting the wing on the 928 yesterday. I was under the impression that this was a tricky process. Apart from having to knock down all the high spots due to the wing's textured finish, it wasn't too bad. I'll let the clear cure for a few days and clear sand & buff. I'll post some pictures if anyone is interested or would like to have theirs done.

I'd love to see some pics and learn a little bit more about the process. I too was under the impression that it was very tricky to get right.

I was at a local p-car event the other night and one of our local listers had his '87 wing painted by another local 928 guy and it looked great. And its held up very nicely over time.

I tracked down the guy that did it at that same event, and he told me he basically stopped by a local auto paint supply shop and got the info he needed on how to do it, bought the supplies and had at it.

I was very impressed with the results.

The short of it was that he sanded down the surfaces, used filler to smooth it out, did a few runs of that, then primed it and painted it, cleared it and voila!

I should add, he has a fair bit of painting experience, but its all self taught in his garage - he does have a sweet home brewed painting booth setup in his garage too.

Anyway, the moral of the story is that it may not be as difficult as it sounds.

I didn't use any filler but I did use high build black primer since the car is black. The primer ended up a bit more bumpy than a body panel but I was able to block it down to a smooth surface. It does look much nicer than the textured finish it originally had.

It depends on how much Armorall was soaked into the rubber wing

Hopefully I won't have future problems with adhesion. I did clean the wing with lacquer thinner and that seemed to get the surface nice and dry. I did not choose to use a flex agent since the wing has very minor give to it. I recall seeing a writeup on painting the wing and if I recall correctly it was using a flex agent additive. Areas which would certainly require a flex agent is the rear bumper cover and possibly the front nose area. I'll shoot a couple of pictures and provide a list of materials needed.

Hi Oscar,
How are things out in Lake Elsinore?? My wing is a my friend's body shop in Pasadena. They are doing a three stage job. I should pick it up Thursday in time for VCR on Sunday. When are you going to come out and join us?? I'd really like to see how your wing came out

You could also get a fiberglass wing:

Rixter,

That's the procedure I read and the one that got the idea going. Thanks for putting that together.

Larrry,

I'll give VCR a shot....not sure what this weekend has in store yet.

It's hollow, but it probably "dimensionalizes" for shipping i.e. it costs the same as a 59 pound cube. Back in the day when I worked for a computer parts distributor, one of my customers needed 20 keyboars $ 9.99 ea. overnighted from Memphios to Hawaii. They ended up costing $19ea in freight. He freaked! I got fired. Oh well...
