Default Aaaagh! Popping out of 4th Gear.

Happens on deceleration. Goes into neutral. Anybody else experienced this? Any thoughts on root-cause? Searching so far has yielded one tech archive somewhat close where the suggestion was gear / synchro / dog teeth rebuild.

Its an 84S. Roughly 100K mi.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I have an 84S that does the same thing, only in 2nd gear. I plan on changing the bushings and seeing if that makes a difference. I have also wondered if a ball cup replacement or adjustment might take care of it. Have you tryed any of these things yet?

I don't think it's a linkage issue. It's probalby something internal. I think if it was linkage (bull cup, coupler, bushings, etc) the trans woudl pop out of gear when it's under the most load (during acceleration) and not when it's slowing down.

If it was linkage then odds are it would also pop out of second but try a small adjustment at the rear shift coupler the clamp where it bolts onto the shift rod 13 mm nut/bolt . Google "Pops out of gear" there is MUCH written and many photos...

Different animal, but is the trans hot when this happens? Other 5-speed did it on a trip, took it an hour to happen first time. Car was new to me. Found out the trans was low as in nearly out of lube. A leaking seal will do that.

Thanks very much for the replies. Car came home yesterday, and unfortunately its early history is unknown.

To answer, Steve, it happens cold. Also happens on a downshift especially if I blip the throttle.

My strategy plan so far: Will begin by checking fluid level, then adjust clamp slightly, then linkage-related bushings and ball-socket parts. Wish me luck./ Any other thoughts, please offer!

On a lighter note, what a blast it was to drive it home. OMG!

And, local sherrif deputy already spotted it --- saw him slow down and crane his neck to peer down my driveway. Wish it wasn't so red. Bet he doesn't even know what it is, but his prey-drive instinct was already kickin in.

Chris
