My rough understanding is that some time around 1990 Porsche increased the assist in the power steering from 75 bar to 100 bar.
Having just driven a 1990 928, I was quite amazed at how much "better" it felt to me (all you guys who like manual steering need not read on). Has anyone with the older units swapped out for a higher pressure unit? If so, what has been your result?
The price for such a higher output unit is $199 after you get a $100 refund on core. That seems like a reasonable price to pay for such a daily interaction with the car.
TIA.

Someone else correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the mounting configuration is slightly different on the 1990+ blocks, making the 'upgrade' not feasible. (I thought about doing this as well.)

In most cases, the core unit returned must be the same as the original one, so don't count on getting your core refund back if you are installing a different unit!

My documentation states that the higher pressure power steering pumps, along wiht revised steering rack seals, started with the 1991 model year.

Seth,
The 90 and your 88 have the same pump.
Maybe the 90 might have "felt better" due to less wear of the pump and rack compared to your 88?
Just a thought.

My steering rack is rebuilt--but PO records do not indicate how long.
I do have 17" wheels, but I've driven other less assisted cars and they feel exactly the same.
The switch is plug and play. I'm checking on the core, though my initial conversation seemed to suggest that this was not a problem.

I'm not familiar with the internals of the 928 pump but if its anything like the Saganaw pump in a billion cars, there is a spring which controlls the pressure. Putting a stiffer spring will boost the pressure proportionally. This may be an adequate fix.
Anyone???
