I have my '89 C4 for sale and a fellow offered to trade me a really nice 1987 928 S4. I've owned lots of Porsches (944,951,911,964, etc...) but I've never owned a 928. I do, however know enough to know a good one. This one is a good one! It is a one owner, 39k miles, original paint, 17" turbo wheels, new Dunlops, all maintenance records, t-belt and pump done at 37k in Sept., 01. Car is really ready to go, but I have no idea what it is worth. He was asking $25,000, but I thought that was very high. I think he wants to trade me straight-up for my C4 and I'm asking $21,500. Is this anywhere close, or should I send him down the road???
Thanks!

Batmobile, why don't you trade cars for a week or two to help make the choice? Your in a great posistion to do this. And in that time you can do the research. Maybe you won't like it... maybe you will.

Unfortunately (for us 928 owners) the 89C4, IMHO, is worth more than the 87S4 even with his low mileage and your high mileage. Over time, I believe the difference will become even greater.
They are quite different cars so the idea of trading for a week is an interesting one.

Thanks for the info! I don't think he'll go for the week-trade idea, though.
I've always wanted a 928, I wish it were a 5-speed. Is it not worth $20,000? It appeals to me because, while the C4 is a really nice car, it has 112k miles, so it has a few nicks and minor issues. The 928S4 is as close to perfect as I've ever seen. I'm still kicking it around. Jerry, I think you are right, unfortunately, there are a LOT more people looking for 911s than there are looking for a 928s. That's those darn purists for you! Any more info. would be appreciated!!!

Of course, make sure and have an inspection done by a 928 mechanic, not just a Porsche mechanic. These are different beasts. Don't let the low mileage get you all excited. 928's like to be driven alot, and low mileage can sometimes be a bad thing. If a 928 is not driven enough, it can be just as bad as if it had a ton of miles on it. Also, be cautious of odometer rollbacks on cars with such low mileage that are 15 years old. Good Luck!

I think that it might be a pretty fair deal given the values published in the Preferred Auto Book used by collectors. An 87 in excellent shape (with ~ 4K miles/year) should be worthe ~$17.5K. There is a note stating to add 2 points (I presume this is $2K) for lower milage cars. At @$19.5K - this is getting close to your price. Lower mileage 928S4/Gt's seem to command a mid 20's price. As suggested - get a PPI done and drive the car. From a monetray standpoint - if the PPI checks out well - you could be the one with the better deal.
