Tires that came off had perfect wear.
These new tires had 200 miles on the before:
* The steering rack “blew”
* New rack and alignment by “Best mechanics in Richmond, VA.” <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" />
Tires shown in pics have 4K mile on them!
After 2, 800 mile started to feel a progressive vibration.
Unfortunately, this started right before we left for “Sharks in the Mountains.”
1K miles later (to SITM and back) this is what I took off!
Classic case of a lifted 928 prior to alignment.
Had them check the toe prior…3/8 toe OUT!
Look, learn, and BELIEVE!!

They obviously lifted the car from the jacking points. That causes the suspension to completely unload, and if not aligned after resettling, will cause rather extreme toe-out soon after the car resettles, which is usually after an hour of driving. YMMV.
Charlie at Intersport (in McLean, VA) knows how to lift a 928 without affecting the suspension. He's scheduled to demo his technique at the upcoming 928 Frenzy (which will be in his shop).

It depends on the roads and how agressively the car is driven, but it's been mentioned that changes in toe from the suspension still settling were still being measured more than 50 miles of driving after the car had been lifted.
