Yes. Worry when it stops humming - and, at some time in the future it WILL stop humming.

Hey at least somethings working properly right now lol, next thing i'm thinking about doing is removing the big fan right behind the radiator and looking to upgrade to dual electric fans, i'm thinking that set up would work a little bit better

You might want to find out why the engine is running a bit hot before you try to fix it. Adding electric fans depending on how you do it may not be an upgrade. Focus on getting the car running and reliable before you start engineering it to make it better. It ran just fine for what 20-25 years !

Yeah, remember what I said about evaluating the whole cooling system. Pump, 'stat, radiator, hoses, fans, etc. Everyone thinks the $7 t-stat is the fix. They are very rarely correct.

Also worth mentioning that you can not run a 928 without a thermostat.

For the overheat problem get a coolant pressure tester. It will allow you to pressurize the cooling system without starting the car. This will allow you to identify leaks in the system. Remember, you don't have to have a loss of coolant to cause overheating, you simply need a loss of pressure. To check thermostat operation, the traditional method of putting it in boiling water will work.

I second the idea of not swapping your fan until you solve the cooling issue.

I'll third the "don't swap it until you solve the issues" philosophy. It just introduces further unkowns into the equation.

However

If you finally conclude that the overheating issue is the fan or fans then start thinking about a swap.

ok so there are a couple different options when it comes to replaceing the thermostat which temp would be the best option? because there are like 4 different ones and im not sure which one to use i hear the failsafe thermostat is suposed to be the best one but which one would be recomended over another?

the only leak that i can visually see is the slave cylinder i could see it basically dripping i have the car in my garage and underneath it lies a nice big sheet of cardboard which is still dry except for under the slave cylinder so i don't believe there are any leaks however i should probably run the tests anyways to find out if there are any internal leaks right?

1. Fix clutch.
2. Drive car, evaluate cooling.
The car should run right at or near the second white line, unlabeled on the gauge. We tend to call it the '190' line, and this is a common place for the car to run. I don't recommend the failsafe thermostat, but you're not there yet.

If you have or can borrow an infrared thermometer gun, they are very helpful in diagnosing also. The leak tester can be found at any radiator shop if you don't want to buy one. Be careful, the coolant expansion tank is probably old, and it's plastic.

BTW, you're slipping into the stream-of-conscience style again.

Under what circumstances does it overheat? My '79 overheats when in stop and go traffic, and the cause is the auxiliary fan switch on the radiator. So the fan never even kicks on. In diagnosing the problem we went to a cooler thermostat first, that helped make the problem less of an issue but it's still there. So next time I take it in we're going to replace the switch.

Listen to Doc your first priority should be get it running and driving so you can evaluate what you bought. Do the basic service items like coolant change , brake fluid flush , get real aquainted with your fuse relay board. Check your front lower ball joints they tend to fall off if original aluminum carriers. There will probably be a number of things which NEED to be fixed, more which would be nice to fix and many things you would like to "fix" like new wheels , more power etc. Try to address the NEEDS first and avoid getting "pot committed" where you feel you have no option but to "stay the course". You have no idea how many times I have heard people say ..."I have so much invested that I HAVE to fix it" ...
