Question Does the 84 have a timing belt warning light?

I think I read that the timing belt warning light was an addition that began with the 85 models. Is this right? What warning if any does the 84 have? Is it just the ! all by itself? I have had that light up in addition to the brake fluid warning so I know it works. I checked my dash lights on ignition and see nothing indicating the timing belt. Anyone know what to look for?

As Ed would say...

Read the owners' manual.

I don't know if the Tbelt Light is on the 84, but reading the owners manual will tell you if it is there.

I wish I could, but I just bought this and it didn't come with one. I am of course going to order one, but in the mean time I was hoping someone who owned an 84 could tell me what to look for, "just in case".

Erik,

No warning light on the 84. I think what you read was correct - they weren't installed until the 85MY.

If in doubt, do the timing belt. If it fails, it will not be a good thing. You may get away without any damage on an 84 (US), but I wouldn't risk it.

Thanks for the confirmation about the 84. So, has anyone retro-fitted a timing belt warning light onto their 84 with success?

Erik,

As far as I can tell it could be done. I have not done it, nor will I probably ever do it. Depends on your spare time factor - if you have a lot of it, give it a shot, it should be an interesting project.

But it would not be a quick and easy bolt on - and you would have to do a stand-alone warning light, or figure a way to segue into central warning (which I would not recommend).

If you decide to try, do tell how it goes and how you did it.

The warning circuit is actually very simple in design. You would have to add the wiring to the tensioner, and then provide a new CWS brain, or go the individiual bulb method.

In using the individual bulb method - you would lose the circuit integrity check that is available standard with the CWS.

Obtaining and using a CWS brain would require tracing each wire input and return from the how ever many other instruments that the CWS already monitors, and also would require that you consider upgrading the Pod to include the new Tbelt idiot light so that the CWS could provide circuit integrity - as well as let you know why the '!' came on. If you go to all that effort - it would be better to really upgrade to the digital dash system, where you can reset the Tblet light in the Pod (unlike the earlier analog dash Pods with this warning light).

It would probably take at least a few weekends to make it work, and several $$$.
