I believe, and I could very well be wrong, that te 5-speed uses dogtoothed synchros. This just from memory of reading the service section of the shop manuals on the 5-speed. it discused dogteeth and what-not.
A 1983 model should have either a G 28.05 or G 28.08 transmission.
These units have the earlier Porsche-designed multi-cone sychronizers. Yes, they are dog-tooth synchros.
The synchros were changed in 1985 to the Borg Warner-design synchros that are more effective and longer-lasting.
You can not retrofit the later synchros into the earlier transmissions.
Some owners have reported better shifting by changing the transmission oil to RedLine or Sweptco. A search of the Archives should give you all the info that you need on this subject.
