Post Question about the 5-speed

What type of a transmittion does a 1983 928 5-speeed have?

The mannor mine shifts seems to indicate the older conventional type.

I have trouble beliveing that Porsche mate such a backward transmittion with such an advanced engine.

The basic question is in the 1983, Porsceh 928's transmittion the type where the gears side, or the type that uses dog toothed syncros?

Thanks

Question

I believe, and I could very well be wrong, that te 5-speed uses dogtoothed synchros. This just from memory of reading the service section of the shop manuals on the 5-speed. it discused dogteeth and what-not.

A 1983 model should have either a G 28.05 or G 28.08 transmission.

These units have the earlier Porsche-designed multi-cone sychronizers. Yes, they are dog-tooth synchros.

The synchros were changed in 1985 to the Borg Warner-design synchros that are more effective and longer-lasting.

You can not retrofit the later synchros into the earlier transmissions.

Some owners have reported better shifting by changing the transmission oil to RedLine or Sweptco. A search of the Archives should give you all the info that you need on this subject.

Hey Wally, how much trouble is it to fit an 85 or later manual to an 83? Just feeling out my options for the eventual tranny rebuild/replace.

Shouldn't be a problem.
