Post new buyer

I am looking at an 88 S4 with 84K miles, outside 80%, inside 80%, drives very nice.
but price is low Asking $8500, got it down to $6000, is this a red flag and stay away kind of thing or... not to good A/C, no oil leaks ??? please tell me your opinions? thanks in advance.

Question

Hi Walter,

Sounds like you have some wiggle room for repairs. The standard answer is to have it inspected - 100 point inspection or so - by someone who knows the 928. It sounds tempting!

You know what they say about a gift horse Walter. An 88 with relatively low miles is a nice find - even nicer if it's a 5-speed (I assume it's an auto).

Spend the $150 to get a thorough prepurchase inspection (PPI), including leakdown test, by a mechanic that is familiar with the 928.

See the attached link for some things to look for:

PPI Check List

Then use the findings to negotiate the final price.

Sounds like you could be onto a winner. Good luck, and let us know how you fared.

That is a very low price. Just be sure to have a thorough inspection done. I think the wholesale price on an 88 S4 might be around 9 or 10 grand. That of course, is supposing a 100% car. Mileage wise I wouldn't worry about this one though. Just make sure it hasn't been hit or bent.

The cheapest Porsche is overpriced and the most expensive one is underpriced... Think about it.

I think what 928 Brothers was trying to say is....

You got Porsches' top of the line model (at the time - and some would say this is true still today, me included) for the least amount of initial investment, when compared to initial purchase price (~$70K new). Yet, the 944 Turbo (aka 951) that you have today brings a higher price (relative to the initial purchase price).

Nonetheless....welcome, and keep us posted reagrding the new addition! (Sorry, not much help on the 944).

Could you please tell me a little about the car?

Thanks again.

Well you need to tell us a few things 1st. What transmission auto or manual. You said it drives nice. but campared to any other car in the world 928's are better even in ratty shape. Does it start hot and cold. does it over heat.
Go through the OWNERS MANUAL and try everything out to see if it all works. (open up the can of worms) and see what jumps out. Absolutely most highly recommend you change ALL !!!!! fluids. That includes brake fluid, P/S fluid (remember it is regular ATF not normal P/S that goes in this system. Go with a good Motor oil, I won't open that topic again. Sure won't hurt to change Anitfreeze make sure it says safe for ALUMINUM! no silicate. There should be two winshield washer sytems one labeled intensive wash. You will learn most about your car during a complete clean up inside & out/ underneath/ engine compartment/ wheel wells/ Battery box (see owners manual) Spare tire storage. When You gotit all spiffed up POST A PICTURE.

Thanks again to all.
It is an automatic car.
It drives very well, the car was very well kept to sertain extent, most everything works with at least so far a few things, like the seat positions, electrical, not all works well, and the A/C only works when it feels like it, but when it does it is very cold... so far interior ok, a few minor things like noisy doors, "panels are not to good and 3 speaker on ea. are loose, back hatch is also loose, I think a new rubber gasket would do? and the hatch shocks don't stay open.
So far that is it, we'll see...
Thanks alot.
Walter.

Joe R in his comments said ", P/S fluid (remember it is regular ATF not normal P/S that goes in this system.
" I have never heard that or have I added any yet...It looks like regular power steering fluid in mine...Is it that way in all years ???

Congrats Wanor1. Go to 928intl.com and look at their on line store - just do some browsing. For example, the hatch shocks are not expensive ( cheaper than ebay) and easy to install.

We have to see some pictures.
