Thrust bearing failure TBF
OK two more this week GTS and 89 S-4 .... so ALL owners of late automatic cars you might want to check the preload on the front flex plate !!!!!!!!!! the 89 was just purchased a few weeks ago so it was BAD when he bought it more reason for a PPI which includes checking the crankshaft end play.

We did not BUY these cars the owners are considering their options. The GTS is a 90,000 mi very nice car , not likely to be parted.... I was just pointing out that the issue persists and checking preload/end play needs to be SOP ...

How often and/or under what operating conditions? PO had mine done 3 years, 15k miles ago.
Thanks,

The interval is a big question but at least once per year at the oil change would seem the minimum or after a few track events...

there is mention of hand cranking the motor. I hate to show my ignorance but how do you hand crank the motor?

OK, I admit I thought about mentioning the little round opening located bottom center on the radiator and the crank handle located under the spare but I decided not to.

I check mine every year during the annual oil change.....it pretty much moves the standard 2-3mm everytime.....I only measured the endplay once....it came back right at .2mm...right where it should be

Did either of these 928's have torque tube replacements or tranny work? I'm thinking TBF is more common in cars that have had the tube or tranny out? It seems cars that are still "stock" don't seem as susceptible to TBF? Of course it could just be mileage....since the higher mileage cars most likely had that type of work done already!

Really sad to hear about these losses.
Our research found the 2-3mm preload to come back after a few hundred miles on a few different 928 automatics after re-setting the front flexplate. Although this is not a good thing, it is more important to measure the crank end play to find out how much there is and if it is within specs. Should be a standard pre-purchase inspection item for all automatic cars and a standard practice for all auto owners periodically.

clockwise. It helps to have the spark plugs out so you aren't fighting the compression in the cylinders. Be sure to only crank clockwise.

Hi Constantine,
This reminds me I wanted to buy a clamp for my GTS but I never heard back from you?
I would really like to fit it to my GTS.
Best,
Roger
