As Wally once or twice has told the list, I'll tell you; IF you would like to stay with Blaupunkt, this is the place, usually, to buy:
When our original Blau went south, started looking around and asking a similar question, Wally posted this site. They aren't showing it now, but I bought a CD 2001, for $105. With shipping, I think it was $117? As John K. says, black face so as to be somewhat muted, matches the interior better, does NOT call out to the would-be thieves.
Original system including the factory amp, only put out 20 watts. This head unit all by itself, puts out 45 watts (peak)x4 channels. Took the factory amp out, and pulled the wiring from the head unit to the amp out. Made my own wiring harness from the CD 2001 head, to the original speaker wires. Wiring diagrams are in the factory service manuals, followed them in splicing from the old plug to the new plug. Plugged everything together, and I have internal music again. No wiring octopus' with all those extra amps, nor the possible electrical drains, and plenty of volume with just the head unit. No whines or other unacceptable noises through the speakers either.
And I am NOT electronically "gifted"!
Only problem I still have, is that the original position of the rear mounting post is not the same as the new post, so I had to make a different bracket.
All my CD's play well, even with the tilt of the original mounting.
Good luck with your search!

I have the original Blaupunkt from my 79 in a box along with the amp. I wanted to get some quality sound put in as soon as I got the car, but, ran into incompetence and poor selection out here. I couldn't find a place that had speakers shallow enough to fit in the doors and the rear.
I do not really want to cut holes. I was also told the entire back seat has to come out to get to the rear speakers. I was quoted $350 just for the installation.
I did get a Clarion CD player with a removable face plate. It has a rolling display, that I programmed to read. "Porsche: There is no substitute"
My speakers are still the stock speakers with terrible sound. I hate it. Anyone out there with a 79 that has kept there interior intact, but, has quality sound?
I cut the below from a Bill Ball post on the 928 Forum http://members3.boardhost.com/928s4vr/index.html?1056361072 .
One link shows a popular Shark CD player the Blaupunkt Toronto. I know others who have the Honolulu installed.

For me Blaupunkt was the only way to go. Despite the fact my car is quite modified it still appears to be all Porsche. The Blaupunk with its black face was a must. The Alpine with its dark grey or silver face was a bad joke. I took it straight back.
I have Alpine speakers in the doors, they have both woofers and tweeters. I have a Blaupunkt sub woofer. Another reason for Blaupunkt is that I found that it didn't jump. Many will jump! My car has quite stiff suspension with bilsteins and 18 inch wheels so that is a pretty good test.
The Blaupunkt sub woofer also only needs a small box. The sony Explode needs almost double the size. The sound is really excellent. The best thing about my system is that there is no sign of it except for the detachable face.
You can see in the photo below that the Alpine speakers didn't require any cutouts and you can just see the face of the stereo. Hope this helps.

The PO on my car had installed an Alpine Tape deck, 6 disc changer, sony equilizer, crossover network, Alpine 3/4/5 channel amp, and 2 x 8 inch subwoofers.
This was a little too much for me, so I 'downsized'.
I ripped out the Alpine tape deck, 6 disc changer, sony equilizer, and crossover network. I replaced all that with an Alpine CDA9811 single CD/MP3/WMA player that can control a disc changer or XM radio (for future compatibility) that I paid $250 for on yahoo shopping. The deck has 3 line outputs that go directly to the amp and has a built in equilizer/crossover capabilities. The 'downsize' was easy, really simplified the amount of equipment in the car (less is more, right), and sounds GREAT! I didn't think I'd get into MP3, but I've created about 4 discs with about 10 albums each on it and I really dig it.
Good luck!

I'm running the P.O.'s tired old Blau CD/amp in the 84 and a new, tacky Kenwood/CD in the 78. Gift. I'd be happy if somebody stole one or both. I usually only turn on tunes at stoplights or on road trips. The 84 sounds, uh, ok. The 78 sounds like doo-doo. Figures. The 84 is catless and loud (can't hear the ok blau) and the 78 is stock quiet (hear plenty of the tired speakers).

The PO had a Kenwood cassette deck. It was hooked to a power amp in the spare tire well which was powering the rear speakers. I removed everything but the speakers along with the aftermarket alarm. The Door speakers are a midrange and a tweeter on each side that have a small passive crossover between them. It looks like they modified the door metal with a chisel! Fortunately the speakers all sound pretty good and there was no modification of the cover panels.
Electronics have evolved a loooong way in the last 20 years. The $140 Sony I dropped in had more than enough power to handle all 4 speakers, and has all sorts of EQ settings that you can play with to tailor the sound to your liking. The central console plate had been modified to fit the Kenwood (likely with the same chisel!), but with a bit of careful work with an exacto knife, the Sony slipped right in and looks ok.
My criteria:
No outboard amps - I have enough gremlins
Not cool enough for someone to steal
Looks ok in the dash
Good sound
With the new window seals (and considering I don't have the muffler bypass :-), I don't need to cover up as much road noise with the system. I find the Sony has plenty of power.
Next I take a baseball bat to the balky power antenna :-)

I just got done installing a Alpine 7897 head unit with 4 4" Infinity 4002i, and two 3002i speakers with two 6" 1/2 Rockford Subs. Two Alpine amps and one small Kenwood 30W for the 3002i's. It sound grean and it will sound even better when I finally figure out how to do the adjustments on the 7897.

I have a Blau Tokyo head unit with Orion Mid-bass 6.5", Cerwin-Vega mids and tweets with Boston crossovers pushed by an Alpine 75 watt X 4 and an Audiobahn 12" Alum powered by an Xtant 6001 600 watt class D in a custom box that fits in the spare wheelwell. More sound than most people can handle! Oh, there is also a 10 disk changer back there somewhere.
The next step involves a component set by Audiobahn with carbon honeycomb cones and a very good crossover that will handle 320 watts rms per side. They come with 6.5", 4", and tweeters. Should be minimum work to install them all.
I do have the plans to build a sub box for the spare wheelwell for a 928 if anyone is interested. It is adjustable depth for whichever sub you choose to use and it's required chamber size. I have built 3 already and sold two to friends here in SLC. Mine is the only 12", the other two are for 10" subs and are level with the rear floor. No, you cannot leave the spare in with it. If there is enough interest, I'll build them for a reasonable fee.

I had a similar experience to Doug. My original PO had a 'professional' stereo install from PawnShopRus installs. I literally ripped out the entire interior of the car except for the drivers seat. My wife looked at it and said, "you're never going to get that put back together!"
Well I did 24 labor hours later might I add with stunning sound. To me, it all starts with fundamentals.
1) Wiring
2) Grounding
3) Equipment
4) Power
Properly grounding the equipment with the recommended gauge wire or more and to the desired ground points as specified by the Porsche manual makes all the difference. Additionaly, INMHO buying 'cheap' stereo stuff is usually followed by the old adage, Pay me now or pay me later in sound quality or features. Finally, less is MORE! The less juice drawing off the alternator the better. So limit the amount of components to the best of your ability; like adding a MP3 player.
Equipment Used:
1 - Alpine MP3/WAV/CD Player
2 - Kenwood 4" 2-ways for Front. Ironically, these were $40 cheaper than the MPQuarts but sound 10x better.
2 - 10" woofers - Mid Base
2 - 4" midrange
2 - 2" tweeters
2 - 10" MBQuart 400W RMS subwoofers
1 - Orion(Red)800w RMS HCCA Amplifier
Additionally, I have had both of my previous cars either stolen or broken into for stereo equipment so therefore I am careful where I'm playing my tunes and went for a stealthy look instead of "Steal Me I've got Alpine in my CAR with my big sticker on the back!"
Good Luck!

For me, I installed equipment from a previous car I had:
Alpine 7980 3-disc in dash changer
A/D/S PQ-20 300W/4-channel amp
Crossover
Boston Acoustics Pro series components
Orion 10" sub
Clifford Security system
As Brad said. It's about fundamentals. 99% of all system issues are layout/installation related.

Thankfully for all of us in the PacNW, Rob F., the chief installer at the local Magnolia Hi-Fi is also a shark owner.
I gave him a tough set of criteria to work with when he installed a system in my '88 S4. My criteria was: 1) stealth, 2) removable sub and amp for track days, 3) durability 4)had to be able to carry the spare 5) Not have to take out a second mortgage to pay for components.
I went with the Alpine CDA 7893 head unit which is a powered head that drives the stock hatch 4" and the rear seat 6"'s. When the whole system is in these rear speakers are mostly for back filling. When amp and sub are yanked, it's cool because I still have tunes to the rear speakers.
I have the Boston Acoustics 6.5(3) in the front doors. The B/A tweets and 4's are in the stock location under stock grills. The 6's are stealth mounted under the carpet on the lower front portion of the door. If anyone looks in my car, they don't see anything to tip them off about an aftermarket stereo being installed. Power to the BA's and the sub is via an Alpine MRV-F540 Amp that is soft mounted to the hatch floor. The amp and the 10" dual voice coil Alpine SWR-1021D sub are mounted under a false floor in the hatch area.
Rob really pulled out his bag of tricks when it came to building the sub box. I was very curious to see how he was going to work with the contradictory "must carry the spare" and "must be a stealth install" restrictions. Carry the spare and not have a box sticking up in the hatch? Here is Rob's solution. VERY COOL.
Where's the amp and sub hiding?

Rob hit all the marks on this install. A completely stealth, moderately priced, awesome sounding system, that allows you to carry the spare on the street, or allow you to remove the amp and sub for the track, and still have tunes.
You can have it all. Hey, that's why we drive 928's right?
