I'm just curious, as I'm thinking about my ultimate wheel decisions and wondering whether selling the original club sports makes sense to offset the cost.

I'm likely going to change the rear wing and the mirrors. I just can't help but make a car "mine". Wouldn't those alone rule me out of concourse competition?

Seth,
It's awesome that you've found the car of your dreams, and even more awesome that it is a pristine '89GT.
Change out the wing, change out the mirrors, do whatever other bolt on mods you desire to make the car your own.
But since you're asking, I would make a suggestion. Keep all the stock parts, CS rims included, because as components they aren't going to be worth much, or be very valuable. However, the desirability they will add to your car should you ever decide to sell, and the owner wants it all back to stock, will definitely be worth more then the amount of selling them off separately.
You gotta know when to hold 'em Seth. Now is the time. Get the cash for your mods from another source than selling off parts from the GT. I guarantee that you will not regret it.
Having said all that, if it turns out you want to let the CS rims go, let me know.

Hey Seth....
Welcome to the damned.....you have a unique 928...one of 53 ish or so made...each with it's own unique character.....Change it as you will...to your own style and liking, but...if the 928 becomes a classic..the 89 GT will be one of the first desirable ones...don't have all the original parts...lower value...but if that doesn't matter to you..then go for it...
Personally ...I love what Chris Lockhart has done and is doing....could I do it?...probably not....all my mods will be ones that can be re-fitted with original parts..including the CS rims...
...pick up one of those common 5-sp GTS's if you want to modify a 928 to your liking ;-) (hee hee).

Three Wheelin'
When I sold my '89 GT, I got $1000 for the rims. The car's new owner did not want them so that was factored into the price of the car. I would personally keep them because for future resale, the buyer may only want those wheels. Also, they can also be used for racing applications. They are very light, and 16" rubber is cheaper than 17 and 18" rubber.

Burning Brakes
Yep, I left the GT rims with Doug.
I guess I have a little different view on the whole thing. Porsches were meant to be driven. Most will never make "collector" status. I highly doubt that any 928 will become a true collectable car. So, the nostalgia of saving all of the original parts is lost on me.
The main reason I passed on keeping those wheels was that the car has had a GTS brake upgrade. The 16" wheels will not fit. I also wanted to fit larger tires and have 9&10" wide wheels now.
Rather than get caught up in the collectability of these cars, I have opted to run the whee out of it as Porsche intended. If that means that I make a few improvements along the way, so be it.
On the other hand Seth, you found a pristine example. If I had done that, it may have been with some consideration of keeping it original. Mine will turn 80k miles today and has had a repaint ( fair quality). I started from a different place with mine. I did it with the full intention of making changes and running hard. The mechanicals, which were EXCELLENT, were my first priority.
To each his own

You guys are ALL making good points.
I have much to consider. If I really think about it, the only thing that has a very high value (relatively) is the CS wheels. So if I just suck it up and keep those, well then I guess its not costing me a LOT of $ in unrecovered investment.
The car has 49K miles and I've committed to put 5-6k on it a year. Frankly, I wish part of me felt comfortable driving the "whee" out of it as Brent is, but I just can't get there. That said, 5-6k is still healthy mileage and I am going to bolt on everything I can think of that I want to make it MINE.
I'll let you all know what I decide.
P.S.--this wheel choice is a real PITA. So many options and so many of them are VERY $$$$. Oooh, the misery of owning a beautiful car--life is so hard ; )

But to answer your question, in the past people here have quoted as much as $2,500 for a pristine set. Ultimately the buyers set the market, and I have not seen any sales of Club Sport wheels go down hear in the last year. You might get interest from a racer, but they also have the 944 wheels they can choose from, albeit the rears are not as wide. I am betting the wheels have the highest value to someone who has an '89 GT but does not (for some reason) have the original wheels. While I have kept mine, they are not my wheel of choice. I have the 17" factory Cup wheels on Gretch and think they look better. They are worlds easier to keep clean I know that for a fact. I do use the Club Sports in a pinch when I need to do tire changes and the Cups have to come off.

I bought two 9's (at different times), one for $100, and another for $150, and then I have one 8 that I got for $125. One more 8 and I'll be in Club Sport heaven. In the meantime, I have a pair of 7's that a local wrench was nice enough to loan to me, so I've got 7's and 9's for the track to match the polished 7's and 9's that came off Franz. The 8's are very hard to find, and the one that I have is a '44 offset (52.3mm), so an orphan GT rim(60mm) won't do me any good. With 8's and 9's I'd run 245's all the way around for the track. I tried putting the 9's up front, too wide, which is a shame because they are relatively easy to find.

As to the value of pristine Club Sports, and I'm talking the rare 8's and 9's, I've seen them as of late top out at around $1500 with rubber. 7's and 9's seem to be topping out at around $800 with rubber. If your patient and willing to hunt around and buy orphan rims, you could probably be into 7's and 9's for about $500. I'm 3/4's of the way to a set of 8's and 9's, and if the last 8 comes in priced like the rest, I'll be at $500 for the rims.
