Photos of '86 instr. cluster wiring + manifold
I'm posting a few photos by request showing the instrument cluster wiring, fuse panel and intake manifold of my '86 Auto under restoration. The car runs well and drives fine. I discovered some oil in the intake manifold while cleaning under there, but I could not find a leak anywhere (any ideas??).
Also there are a couple of loose wires UNDER the instrument cluster (see photos), which do not appear to connect to anything. And a round plug covered with black tape not connected either. If anyone has the answer to the wiring mystery, please let me know.

Frankly, I never thought that oil should be NORMAL in the intake manifold...Are you sure about this???

Athenian, the round plug with black tape goes to one of your pod switch/*****. (i.e. fog light switch) Did you notice if all of the pod switches have plugs on them and are functioning? Someone might have bypassed it if there was faulty wiring.
The small blue and brown plugs go to the small push-buttons on the very bottom of the pod.
I have a question for you.. what does this plug go to? I circled the plug in your photo in yellow:

The small 4-hole female end is loose under the dash.
Edit: those blue and brown wires can also go to the resistors on the very bottom of the pod next to the push buttons.
The small blue and brown plugs go to the small push-buttons on the very bottom of the pod.
I have a question for you.. what does this plug go to? I circled the plug in your photo in yellow:

Okay, the round plug circled in your photo connects to the directional switch (turn signals) on the steering column.
As for your answers to my questions:
There is no push-button switch on the left side of the pod in my car. There's a small black push-botton switch on the right side of the pod but it has wires connecting to it already....
All the pod switches have plugs connecting to them. The plug with the black tape around it seems to be extra (maybe for Euro cars - who knows??).

I just had my pod apart and I also had a round connector that was taped over. I'm guessing it's for a Euro-only switch or something like that. Maybe the rear fog light?

I think you're probably right about the Euro fog light switch for the extra plug.

Yeah I have a Euro and the bottom left pod ****/button is for the Rear Fog light.. I guess they could have included the same wiring switch even on US cars but unused?
The small pushbutton under the pod on the left side is the tripodometer reset, the US cars have it on the lower left pod switch right?
The round plug goes to the turn signal/healight/wiper combo switch? Are you sure it's for the turn signals specifically? Because my turn signals are covered in the 2 main oddball shaped plugs that go into the back of that combo. Do you think it could be for cruise control? (which mine doesn't have)

There are three controls on the bottom of the pod: 1)Instrument illumination control 2) Intensive washer system switch 3) Intermittent wiper interval control (at least on an '87 US version). I'd guess the blue/brown pair are one of those, although the wires to mine were all black or yellow.

Z is right about the oil in the induction system and about the Idle Stabilizer. Look in the Intake Plemums and you'll probably find a couple of ounces of fresher looking engine oil there too.

Okay - thanks Bill, I think I norrowed the field down to internsive washer switch missing (I can't see one)...On the '86 cars, the instrument illumination control is on the right side (under the pod), and the intermittent wiper interval control switch is on the right. That leaves me to believe that my switch for the intensive washer system is missing in action!!! My car is equiped with the system from factory.
I have the other two switches connected already...Thanks to all of you for the info...

The blue and brown wires go to the instrument lights dimmer (left side of pod, underneath) as seen in the pic below

actually I have a Euro 928 S and when I disassembled the instrument pod I also found the above depicted plug (socket) which is not connected. In the panel there are 5 switches: light, front fog light, rear fog light, rear window heater, hazard light and there is no empty recess for any additional switch.

Hello Athenian, I've got a 86,5 Euro S and in my dash pod the taped connector is also present even though there is no spare place for an additional switch. The car has got the rear fog light. Under the dash pod there are two press buttons, one for the odometer, one to operate the intensive windscreen cleaning system. The rotary switch for the illumination control is on the left, the window wiper control on the right. I've found oil in the intake as well, not as much as in yours though.
