Default New start/stall issue...ideas?

Just started happening sporadically. Seems at cold start the car starts but dies almost instantly because it won't hold idle. Light blip of throttle seems to work and then it runs fine. Wondering what is possibly going out so I can get one ordered and replaced before it leaves me stranded somewhere.

Try the WD40 trick first. See if that helps. Otherwise, it's a PITA to fix!

Did a search but didn't find a procedure. Which hose do I spray down? Carb cleaner or WD40? Both are mentioned. I can't take it off to clean it.

Been a while, but Disconnect one of the hoses on #12 (thanks Tony!). Feel for the suction, that's where you want to spray the WD40.

Might also be your idle switch(TPS) not working properly or gaswires that needs adjustment.
If you move the throttle linkage with your hand on the intake you should hear a dsitinct click with a very small movement of the gaswire and same when letting go of the linkage again.
The TPS is under the intake and if the switch is bad you need to lift the intake to replace it.(if you are lucky it is just the adjustment that needs to be done to the cables)

The cables were recently adjusted by Greg at Precision so I don't think that is the issue. Thanks for the idea though. I am learning new stuff everyday here.

Ron:

Spray WD-40 into the hose right behind #12 on the picture. Spray a bunch...it will not hurt anything. It sometimes helps to spray and rev the engine and let it return to idle quickly. When it trys to stall, the idle stabilizer opens all the way and sucks a bunch more air/WD-40. The best time to do this is when the engine is cooled off, so that the WD-40 doesn't evaporate so quickly. Do it in the evening after it has cooled down some....let it soak overnight....and then hit it again in the morning. You will need to go out and stand on the throttle to burn off the remaining WD-40 in the intake system. Go get it good and hot and then see if it is better the next day.

I did this to my car about a year ago when i had a similiar issue, but in my case the idle got worse. It would flutter, but it was slow enough that I could modulate it with the throttle pedal. When i sprayed the WD-40 in it was so erratic that it was undriveable. It didnt return to the previous non idle, but driveable state for a few weeks later. Ive since solved the idle with a combination of a new ISV and TPS sensor which needs to be indexed properly. Its a pain in the ***, and i would probably hold it off until you refinish the manifold, or need to do other things. I was somewhat annoyed, i rebuilt the engine, and had the car running and only 100 miles later decided to pull the intake off yet again and get it done once and for all.

I still have an issue sometimes, when the AC is on. But I believe it to be because of the many throttle cables in the system, i need to adjust them so that there is no slack with any of the 3 cables. I think there is some binding in the cables still.

The car shouldnt leave you stranded at all, its just an annoyance. But one I lived with for the first 12 months that I owned the car.

I am kinda curious why this would suddenly happen though. Mine never worked right when i bought the car, but if your car idled fine before and just started doing this then i would think something has failed, i would think the ISV is something that degrades over time, but the TPS switch i think can fail suddenly and being that its a switch could account for the idle being fine one day and inoperable the next.

I think Ryan is on the right track, personally. The ISV usually screws up when the car gets hot, for some reason....not so much when they are cold. Make sure the throttle is returning all the way to idle and you can hear the click, Ron. If in doubt, swing by and I'll take a look....or screw the throttle cable near the firewall in a couple of turns and see what happens. This will make sure there is slack in the throttle cable.
