Tony,

I have that LP, too! Did you put a turntable in your hatch? How do you keep the tone arm from skipping when going over bots dots?

Seriously, I seem to attract all strains of ricers and rodders. On the freeway, a good 3rd gear pull usually shuts 'em up and makes 'em back off my tail.

I've had plenty of muscle cars in my past and totally respect the efforts people put into them. I, too, don't understand the coffee can/badge engineering subculture and the over-aggressive behavior some (not all) exhibit.

Peace.....

I really dislike the sound of the fart cans too. Yesterday a guy in a S10 convertible (factory I am sure ) drove by my house and I turned to look because it sounded like the biggest POS on the planet. But I must admit to rice in 1986.... I had a 1970 Challenger with the biggest hood scoop on it, so big I could hardly park in a parking lot because I couldnt see the passenger front corner of the car to maneuver. It was a hood scoop from a car that had a blower on it. What did I have under there? A 383 (not bad) with a four barrel carburetor. But man was it cool when I was 16....

I got no problem with ricerockets. Somebody said it here, after all they ARE car people, involved at some level in their rides. You can disagree with their choices, which range from turboskateboard to monstertruck, but the fact is that 90 percent of the folks in this country are pretty much autouninvolved. Most of them are still kids with very limited wallets, and I suspect very few of them will be tooling around in tricked out civics when they reach our age.
At the car wash the other day I had a kid come over and drool and study for a bit, he seemed seriously interested so I told him about the 928 a bit while drying the car. He went away in awe, not what I said but what he saw, kind of dejectedly sighed and said - well, I guess I'll just stay with my cheap car for a while (an 87 300ZX Turbo). Point is, one good look and he's future convert for sure. Live and let live.

Like I said, I was a ricer in my day, with a tricked out 280Z. Huge whale tail, huge flares, and loud exhaust. It was even pretty fast. I lightened it, modified the engine, and all that stuff. You hot rod whatever it is you can afford to drive at the time, if you are a car person. There was no way back then, that I could have spent the money on a 928. But I was learning about cars, racing, engines, and all that stuff. I made my mistakes. It was better that I crashed my Z multiple times, and learned my lesson, than to learn with my 928 now...

Those ricers may be future 928 owners in training...

But I know what you mean about the aggressive driving.
I used to do it too...
They are trying to provoke you to race.
Why?
Why does anyone race?
It's all the same reasons...

But mostly to prove their car is faster...

The idea they have, is that a lightweight car, with moderate power,
will be faster than a heavy car with a lot of power...

The ones that are all looks, usually won't try to race you...
It's the real car guys, who have modified engines, and NOS,
who will try to race you. Because in many cases, a lightened import, with 250HP on NOS, will beat the 928 off the line... And that is all they need, to stroke their ego, and prove their point. Never mind that you would overtake them, and outrun them all day on the freeway...

I never owned a Ricer, but I guess you could say one owns me! My bride of 18 years is Japanese. And no, the term "Ricer" does not offend either one of us.

In the early 70's I grew up in the So. Cal VW Scene (Der Kleiner Panzers). To many muscle car enthusiasts we were a joke, but I had fun blowing there doors off. I felt like I was always trying to prove something. My memories of those days are very similar to the movie American Graffiti, at midnight blocking off streets near the Nabisco factory and drag racing until the police would arrive to run us off.

In the early 80’s I owned a VW Scirocco with trick suspension, brakes, and a Callaway turbo. This was what I called a German Ricer in a way. The Ricer scene was just starting to kick-in around this time. But I still was the underdog, with little respect except in a small circle. Still trying to prove something…..

I the early 90’s I decide to get my dream car, A 1983 Porsche 928S. Well here I am 30 years later and getting no respect and still trying to prove something……

Here is a good article on the ricer scene. ‘The Kids Are Still Alright’

I'll try to remember that "these are just car guys" the next time the PUNK in the riced out green Honda Del Sol nearly rear ends me on the highway at 80+ MPH, then sees a Ferrari 355 Spyder and decides to chase that instead.

Funny, this happened on my way home from work after the AM episode with the Civic. In both cases I was just driving like any normal human.

These kids have no respect for speed or safety. They are a rolling embarrasment to our poor enforcement of what constitutes real highway etiquite and respect.

Keep Rice, except to pass.

It only gets worse...
Subaru's, Honda's, 4 & 6 bangers pushing mid 200HP , with turbo's 300+, they handle, and cost from $17 to $30k.
Besides if the teeny-bop crowd finds out what they could have for peanuts -a sHARk!-
there wouldn't be many whole 928's left. Lotta parts though.
Of course that might help boost resale -investment- for those of that bent.
Live and let live. At least till they ride Pattycakes gorgeous hindend

Actualy, the ricers don't challange me.

I've been challanged by a Z.28 Camaro, who smoked me pretty good. And a Mustang GT, who I ate alought of rear end untill we hit 130, and my additional 5 miles an hour pased him up.

The V6 camaros are much more fun for me. :-)

I think I need more power though.

Any one know of a way to graft a VTEC, or VVTL onto a 928S? Hum, lets see, varabile geometry carbon fiber intake, headers and a free flowing exaust, VVLT or VTEC, and maybe a engine management system. Think I could get close to 100 hp/liter? 470 hp. I like the sound of that! Don't like the price tag though. Theres got to be a way...

Btw, the teenie bopers have found the 928... I can't even drink yet. Excepting the mental bars that Porsche throws up, everyone that I know that has a compact car, could own mine...

Cool

Taste- a purely subjective thing.

Really, looking at what the kids are doing these days [the latest: go to a junkyard, pull things such as door handles and hatches from cars of a different color, and affix them to yours~], it doesn't seem so much a question of quality...as QUANTITY.

Yeah, in the '80's I had a turbocharged Scirocco as well. And it had a growling exhaust, wide tires, a loud stereo, words written across the top of the windscreen, and even modified tail lights.

I had a sense of taste then as now, so I kept the car subtle. Of course, that was in style then. Not the case today: Just as Huey Louis once said in a song that it was "Hip To Be Square", I think today it is "hip to be tasteless".

You have to realize that this silliness that you encounter design-wise doesn't look silly to them at all. In fact, from their standpoint, I bet our cars look stupid.

-There's no excuse for their driving like ********. If they tailgate you or something, flash your taillights, or if you have a Euro, flash your rear fog light. Often times however, the kids really are just interested in your car, and/or want some sort of interaction. Slow down and wave at them, or pull over into a parking lot and talk cars for a while. Or make like the starship Enterprise and engage the warp-drive, giving them something to talk to their friends about.

N!

Cool

I have a way to handle those guys. I say to them:
"You win, I lose", and go on my way. To the fools that want to convince me they have some punk junk that can beat me to the next intersection, I simply invite them to race me to the East Coast and back, or to Portland, Oregon from California and back. That's the end of it.
I find it best to remember the designed purpose of the 928: a true Grand Touring machine that transports two people and their (minimal) luggage great distances in high sustained speeds, comfortably and safely. 928s are meant to be an alternative to air travel. It is difficult to think of anything more removed from the true character of the 928 than a purpose-built drag racer.
I recall the days of the 356 when everyone who drove a Porsche flashed at each other and were regarded as a bit odd by the rest of the populace.
But no one who drove one cared, because they were at a different level of awareness; at a different trophic level.
When I was in high school and drove a '55 chey with spinner hubcaps, dumped in the front and scavengers hanging down below the rear axle, molded and pinstripped, I was fortunate enough to make the acquaintance of a guy who had and track raced (SCCA) his 356 Speedster. Whoa!! Redirected my thinking and I never looked back.
He did this to me!!
Now I find watching drag races puts me to sleep with boredom and lack of relevancy. Are they serious?? Art Arfons and his jet dragster already did it all. Ho hum. Hey, if that's your thing, well that's fine...just don't try to impress me with it.
Yep...they win, I lose. But we won't share with them who really wins. They probably wouldn't understand.

I'm thinking of ricing out my parents' '84 Toyota minivan--it shouldn't be too bad, it comes complete with 5-speed, 145hp engine with the same oil as in 1986, half the body already rusted off for weight saving, plus only the driver's door working to avoid having those heavy passengers, and not to mention completely shot brakes (when you're going fast, why would you want to slow down?). Only problem, though, it's got rear wheel drive, so I suppose it can't really compete with all those front wheel drive cars that all the most SERIOUS street racers go for. Oh well. [sigh]

Hot Rodding Hondas, hi-boy's Mercury's, who cares. I'm just glad they keep the hot rod spirit alive. I remember my teens, JC Whitney - lots of show, no go. What's the difference? (I have no problem with the honda 4 cyl being the modern small block chevy.)

Maybe they should all get 928's so they can post here on how they can't afford a stroker - just like us. (Oh and by the way - how old school can yo get?)

Hey, I like my 928, but under no illusions re modern technology!
